2018, explained in pictures by women and nonbinary photographers

A tribute to the women and nonbinary photographers who hustle behind the camera to bring us the news.

News photography is an industry dominated by men — especially the wire services, like AP Images and Getty Images, which most newsrooms rely on for visual coverage. These wire services drive most of our visual news consumption.

And that problem is especially stark in the annual “Year in Pictures” galleries that most news organizations publish every December. Here’s a thread by Daniella Zalcman of Women Photograph chronicling the gender disparity in Year in Pictures galleries — overall, the numbers are frustratingly grim.

They’re especially frustrating considering the fact that in photojournalism, 2018 was the year many brave women spoke out about the gender and racial disparity within our industry and the rampant harassment many face in order to do their work.

This gallery is a tribute to them: the women and nonbinary photographers who hustle behind the camera to bring us the news. It’s a journey into darkness, triumph, levity, and unimaginable pain.
