Photoworld analyzed more than 100,000 geotagged Instagram posts over an eight-day period in March, and its map visualizes where 18 popular foods were most frequently mentioned:
You can imagine how much more we would learn about this if it were tracked over a longer period of time. Still, this map is really fun to browse, and reveals some interesting points about just how global diet has become (seven of my favorite points below). My only criticism of this map? It doesn't include ramen. The top five tagging cities for each food type are listed in the lower left.
Pulled pork is super popular in London
LA loves bulgogi
Bangkok loves macarons
New York City narrowly edged out Shanghai in its love of xiaolongbao, or steamed buns
Currywurst is, umm, not the most popular food outside of Germany
Churros are internationally beloved
Japan is Instagram's curry king
Photography and copyright nerds will be pleased to know that Photoworld tastefully collected and sourced all the photos used in the project in a public Google Doc, complete with links back to the original images.
