The 76th annual Golden Globes will air live on NBC on Sunday, January 6, at 8 pm Eastern/5 pm Pacific. Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg and Killing Eve star Sandra Oh will co-host the show, which will be held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
What makes the Globes, organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HPFA), special is that it’s a major televised awards show that recognizes achievement in both television and film — usually, those modes of entertainment are recognized separately at the Emmys and Oscars. The awards are also considered to be the kickoff of the annual Hollywood awards season that concludes with the Oscars in late February, and a place where frontrunners can emerge.
Here’s what to expect at the 2019 awards, and how to watch them.

Oh and Samberg are the first duo to host the Globes since Amy Poehler and Tina Fey co-hosted for a three-year run in 2013 to 2015. (Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers hosted solo in 2016, 2017, and 2018.) Going into the ceremony, the vibe of Oh and Samberg’s promotional clips indicates that the two likable stars will be spoofing the idea that they’re best friends in a way that two very good friends who respect each other’s work and talent might do.
“I like playing off someone else and having there be a looseness to it and the ability to try things that are not necessarily just straight jokes to [the teleprompter],” Samberg told Oh in a feature for the Hollywood Reporter in which they interviewed each other ahead of the awards. “That’s why I’m excited to do it with you, ’cause you’re such an incredible performer.”
In the same interview, Oh hinted that the 2019 Globes may be light on political commentary and more about celebrating achievement in movies like Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians and how the arts can change culture.
“I don’t think it’s shallow to 1) have fun and 2) be honestly celebratory. Just the fact that I’m fucking up there is crazy-pants in a great way. And I’m not interested in [talking about Trump] at all. What I’m interested in is pointing to actual real change,” Oh said.
The Globes may be a barometer for possible Oscar contenders like Vice, The Favourite, and Green Book
The top Golden Globe nominee on the film side is Adam McKay’s Dick Cheney biopic Vice, which has six nominations in the comedy or musical film categories. Prior to its Christmas Day release, Vice had a lot of buzz (its Golden Globe nominations, announced on December 6, helped), but that buzz has since mellowed and the film has received mixed reviews.
Right behind Vice, The Favourite, a saucy tale of wickedness and sex in Queen Anne’s court, and Green Book, a historical look at racism (perhaps too simple a look) in the deep South in 1960, both received five nominations.
Two of the year’s biggest success stories, Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians, both received Best Picture nods, in the drama and comedy or musical categories, respectively.
Meanwhile, BlacKkKlansman and A Star Is Born (competing as a drama, despite its musical elements) lead the drama categories with five nominations apiece. And Jeff Bridges will be honored with 2019’s Cecil B. DeMille Award, a special lifetime achievement for a person’s body of work in film.
The 2019 Golden Globes will be a place for new television shows (and Carol Burnett) to shine
For better or worse, the Golden Globes have often recognized shiny new television shows over more established critical favorites, and the 2019 awards will be no exception.
Only three shows — drama The Americans (eligible for season six), comedy The Good Place (eligible for seasons two and three), and comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (eligible for season two, which debuted the day before the nominations were announced but screened earlier for press) — are nominated for a season after their first.
This means there’s opportunity for several different freshman series to take home trophies. The nominees include Showtime’s Kidding, Netflix’s The Kominsky Method, and HBO’s Barry in comedy, and include Netflix’s Bodyguard, Amazon’s Homecoming, BBC America’s Killing Eve in drama. Golden Globes co-host Sandra Oh is also nominated for her performance in Killing Eve.
The 2019 Golden Globes will also unveil the Carol Burnett Award, which “honors the highest level of achievement” on the small screen and is meant to serve as the television equivalent to the Globe’s Cecil B. DeMille award. The new honor’s namesake, who is best known for her variety show (The Carol Burnett Show) and her seven decades of work, will be the first recipient of the award.

Live stream: NBC has exclusive rights to the awards show, so the surefire way to stream the 2019 Golden Globes is via the NBC website or the network’s app. You will need a subscription to a service like Optimum, Comcast, or other cable or satellite provider — or, at the very least, a borrowed login from someone who does.
However, according to NBC News, 2019 will also be the first year that viewers will be able to stream the ceremony via NBC’s Facebook page.
