Ohio results for every midterm race
There’s a close, contentious governor’s race in Ohio now that Gov. John Kasich (R) is term-limited and retiring.
Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine and Democrat Richard Cordray, the former state attorney general and Obama consumer watchdog at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (now rebranded the BCFP), are going head-to-head in a tight race for governor. Both are considered the centrist, mainstream candidates of their respective parties. The Buckeye State is one of the most important governor’s races in the country, and given how much the state swings, it will be closely watched.
Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown (D) is facing Republican challenger Rep. Jim Renacci in the Senate race, but the race hasn’t been as tight as some of the other Senate Democrats running in states where Trump won in 2016. Trump won Ohio by 8 points.
There are a few key House races as well. In Ohio’s First Congressional District, Rep. Steve Chabot (R) is facing Aftab Pureval (D). The race is rated a toss-up by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. And remember that nail-biter of a special election for Ohio’s 12th Congressional District? Republican winner Rep. Troy Balderson is facing off against Danny O’Connor (D) again.
There’s also a ballot initiative to reduce the penalty for obtaining, using, and possessing drugs to a misdemeanor.
Ohio’s state legislature has large Republican majorities, and Daily Kos does not expect that to change when all of the state House of Representatives and half of the state Senate is on the ballot.
President Trump’s approval rating is pretty split here, per Morning Consult.
