North Dakota results for every midterm race
North Dakota features one of the most contentious Senate races of 2018, as Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp fights an uphill battle to keep her seat. Heitkamp finds herself in the difficult position of running for reelection in a state Donald Trump won by over 35 points in 2016.
Republicans are feeling bullish about their pick to run against Heitkamp: at-large Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer. The GOP is especially hitting Heitkamp on her recent vote against newly-confirmed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. If she loses, Democrats’ slim chance of flipping the Senate will likely go with her.
Heitkamp is certainly one of the more conservative Democrats in the Senate, but she’s voted in line with the Democratic caucus on a few key issues, including against the Republican tax cuts and attempt to kill the Affordable Care Act, and against Kavanaugh (though she voted for Trump’s first Supreme Court pick, Neil Gorsuch).
There is also a race to fill the state’s single at-large House seat now that Cramer is running for Senate: Mac Schneider (D) and Kelly Armstrong (R). The state has ballot initiatives, including one to decriminalize marijuana and another to restrict voting in the state to US citizens.
North Dakota’s legislative assembly has a Republican supermajority, and Daily Kos does not expect that to change today.
President Trump is also popular here, with Morning Consult putting his job approval rating above 50 percent.
