Michigan results for every midterm race
Democrats can regain a lot of ground today in Michigan, the site of Donald Trump’s perhaps most stunning win in 2016.
The state is likely to reelect a Democratic senator in Debbie Stabenow. Democrat Gretchen Whitmer has built a solid lead in the governor’s race to replace horridly unpopular, term-limited Gov. Rick Snyder, who was weighed down by the Flint water crisis and other dissatisfactions with his two terms as governor. Whitmer faces Republican Attorney General Bill Schuette, who has struggled to escape the party’s tarnished brand under Snyder.
Election forecasters think Democrats have at least two good House pick-up opportunities here — in the 11th District, where David Trott retired, and the Eighth District, where GOP incumbent Mike Bishop is fighting for his political life — and a few other reaches that might swing their way if the “blue wave” is big enough.
Democrats also have an outside chance to flip the state House, where they would need to turn at least nine Republican-held seats blue. Rebuilding the party’s Midwestern wall starts with a big Election Day in Michigan for Democrats.
Several ballot initiatives are of note: one to legalize recreational marijuana, another to establish an independent redistricting commission (the gold standard among good-government types), and several intertwined provisions to expand voting rights, such as automatic voter registration and same-day registration.
Trump’s popularity here has taken a dive since his surprising win in the state, with Morning Consult putting his disapproval rating above 50 percent.
