Kansas results for every midterm race
Kansas has already brought a lot of fireworks to this election cycle.
Right-wing hardliner and Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who’s come under scrutiny for ties to white supremacist groups and had President Donald Trump’s endorsement, narrowly ousted Gov. Jeff Colyer for the Republican nomination for governor. State Sen. Laura Kelly is the Democratic nominee for governor in a race that’s been neck-and-neck ever since.
Democrats are also keeping a close eye on two other Kansas elections. One is the state’s Second Congressional District, where the Democrat, former gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis, and the Republican, first-time candidate Steve Watkins, are fighting over an open seat. The other is the race for the Third Congressional District, where Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder is desperately trying to hang on to a district that narrowly voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016.
For years, Kansas Republicans, who hold a supermajority in the state House of Representatives, have successfully enacted sweeping conservative policies, passing deep tax cuts and slashing social programs — to the point that the state’s Supreme Court mandated they invest more in their schools. All of that has sparked a heated progressive movement in the state. The entire state House is on the ballot today.
Still, Kansas has been deep red for some time, and President Trump still enjoys a comfortable favorability margin in the state, according to Morning Consult.
