Illinois results for every midterm race
In Illinois, one of the least popular governors in the country is up for reelection, an anti-abortion Democrat is on the ballot against an actual Nazi, and one of Congress’s fiercest immigration advocates is retiring.
Illinois is a state in dire economic turmoil. Its bond rating is hovering one level above “junk” status, and the state went two years without a budget before finally passing one with a significant tax hike last summer. November will undoubtedly be a race about stabilizing the state’s financial situation and breaking its long history of corrupt leadership (four of the past ten governors have ended up in prison).
That starts with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, the state’s incredibly disliked former venture capitalist governor, who will be facing Democrat J.B. Pritzker, a billionaire entrepreneur who has his own financial baggage. While Chicago remains the Democratic epicenter in Illinois, Democrats are also hoping to turn four red congressional districts blue this year.
One candidate Democrats have been excited about is Lauren Underwood, a rising star in the Democratic Party, who is taking on incumbent Rep. Randy Hultgren (R) in Illinois’s 14th Congressional District. Underwood, a nurse and former adviser in the Department of Health and Human Services, has enjoyed the support of Hillary Clinton and is on the Democratic Campaign Committee’s Red to Blue list.
President Trump is unpopular in Illinois, with approval ratings that don’t crack 40 percent, according to Morning Consult.
