The 72nd annual Tony Awards kicked off Sunday evening at Radio City Music Hall, honoring the best and brightest of Broadway for the 2017-’18 season. Co-hosts Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban played it low-key in a ceremony that, unusually, saw more attention focused on the year’s two biggest plays — Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and the landmark revival of Angels in America — than to the musicals.
The 2018 season featured a lighter crop of musicals compared to 2016’s Hamilton and last year’s Dear Evan Hansen. That meant that Cursed Child, the only new play nominee still running, even snagged a nomination for Best Choreography. Yet despite glitzier musicals like Spongebob and Mean Girls leading the musicals field, it was the underdog musical The Band’s Visit that swept the ceremony. The musical, about an accidental meeting in small-town Israel between locals and a group of Egyptian musicians, won 10 of its 11 nominations, including Best Musical. Meanwhile Cursed Child dominated in the play category, picking up a slew of technical wins and the nod for Best Play.
In the acting category, Andrew Garfield’s Angels performance as prophet Prior Walter edged out veteran stage actor Mark Rylance, who received his fourth Tony nomination for Farinelli and the King, while Garfield’s co-star Nathan Lane picked up his third Tony win for his role as infamous real-life lawyer Roy Cohn.
“It is the profound privilege of my life to play Prior Walter, because he represents the spirit of the LGBTQ community,” Garfield said in his acceptance speech. ”We are all sacred and we all belong, so let’s just bake a cake for everyone who wants a cake to be baked.”
Here are all the winners at the 72nd annual Tony Awards.
