The 89th annual Academy Awards — the culmination of months of hype, campaigning, and controversy around the biggest films of the past year — have arrived. The Oscars isn’t always the most fun awards show; the number of crowd-pleasing performances is usually low, and the Oscars’ prestigious status typically invites a more sober awards ceremony than, say the Golden Globes. But as a cultural event, it doesn’t get much bigger than this one, folks.
Which isn’t to say watching the Oscars is boring! In addition to the annual promise of onstage flubs and controversy-stoking speeches, this year’s ceremony has several intriguing subplots to track: Will La La Land meet or break the record for most Oscars won by a single film? Will the critically beloved Moonlight achieve a surprise victory over La La Land, the heavy favorite to win Best Picture? Will three or more of this year’s acting awards go to performers of color for the first time ever?
The only way to find out is to watch the show, and follow along with the Vox Culture team as we witness both the familiar and the strange via these Oscars bingo cards. Check off the quotes, the jokes, and the wins that will define this year’s ceremony as they happen, and perhaps you too can be an Oscar winner this year.
