Self-driving cars will have to clear a new federal safety checklist | Recode Daily: September 20, 2016

The Department of Transportation is releasing its first set of guidelines for autonomous vehicles today.

.The first federal guidelines for autonomous vehicles, due out today, will include a 15-point safety assessment that manufacturers will have to address, covering such factors as software performance and testing, data collection and sharing, and the programming for dealing with ethical and conflict situations on the road. States will retain their authority to license human drivers and register cars; set and enforce traffic laws; and regulate vehicle insurance and liability.
