It’s been a tragic week for America, with the police shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile and then the the Dallas mass shooting all unfolding in the span of just a few days.
But a video by AJ+, compiled from the hashtag #CarefreeBlackKids2k16, offers a brief reminder of why movements like Black Lives Matter are so important, and why we have to overcome these tragedies. Black Lives Matter pushes us to make life better for these smiling, dancing black kids, none of whom should have to worry about getting killed by a police officer when they’re doing nothing wrong. (Obviously, no one should fall victim to this, but the statistics show black people are disproportionately likely to be killed by police.)
The video is also just a welcome shot of jubilation after such a dismal week. As Heben Nigatu, who promoted the hashtag on social media, said on Twitter, "I hope this thread brought some joy into your day. I really needed this."

Contributions are a key part of the future of Vox
Readers rely on Vox for clear, nuanced coverage that not only illuminates the issues, but poses solutions, too. And we rely on help from our readers: Advertising and grants cover the majority of our costs, but we count on contributions to help us close the gaps in our budget. In fact, we’re looking to reach 95,000 individual contributions before the end of the year. Will you make the next contribution right now? Our average gift is just $20 — and it goes a long way in helping us keep our work free. Vox is here to help everyone understand what’s shaping the world — not just the people who can afford to pay for a subscription. We believe that’s an important part of building a more equal society. Join that mission by making a contribution today.
