It’s the end of an era: This week, just months after the 20th anniversary of its initial public offering, Yahoo said it would sell its core business to Verizon for $4.83 billion. The iconic internet brand held a special place in the tech landscape even as it was outpaced by competitors like Google and Facebook.
"People care about Yahoo, even if they don’t use it," Recode’s Kara Swisher said on the latest episode of Too Embarrassed to Ask. "It’s a really fascinating conundrum."
On the new podcast, she and The Verge’s Lauren Goode looked back on Yahoo’s two-decade history, some of its biggest hits and also its biggest missteps. They also examined the ups and downs of its many leaders, including Jerry Yang, Terry Semel and Marissa Mayer.
Kara offered some informed guesses as to what might be next for Mayer after the Verizon deal is officially completed, but the big question is: What on earth will Kara Swisher do with her time now? Start playing Pokémon Go?
"Pokémon never!" she said. "Pokémon get the fuck away. You know that’s my policy."
(The real answer: Turning more of her reporting attention to companies like Twitter and Apple.)
