A Samsung executive says bendable phone screens are 'right around the corner'

The key is bringing manufacturing costs down.

The head of Samsung's North American business says that bendable phone screens are not only possible, but coming soon.

"I think it’s relatively right around the corner," Gregory Lee said, speaking Thursday at Rutberg's Future:Mobile conference in Half Moon Bay, Calif.

His comments follow a Bloomberg report earlier this week that said Samsung will introduce two models next year with foldable displays.

Lee said that Samsung has had bendable display prototypes for about 10 years.

"It just has been very difficult to manufacture at a reasonable cost," he said.

Lee also ventured a few guesses on the broader technology future, saying to expect 5G to take off sooner than most people think and that mobile carriers will remain an important part of the phone distribution chain. He also said to expect the Golden State Warriors to win their NBA Finals series against the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games, so we should get a sense soon on how good Lee is at prognosticating.
