Samsung Runs Out of Test Phones Designed to Win Over iPhone Users

The company has a brief window of opportunity to lure Apple die-hards before the next iPhone gets introduced.

What was designed to be a scheme to entice Apple fans to try out Samsung’s latest phones ahead of the next iPhone is shaping up to be a squandered opportunity.

Samsung cooked up a clever promotion that offered iPhone owners 30 days to try out one of Samsung’s latest flagship phones — service included. But the company wasn’t prepared for the demand and within hours ran out of inventory for its Ultimate Test Drive promotion.

“The response to our Ultimate Test Drive has been overwhelming and exceeded our expectations,” a Samsung representative told Re/code. “In just a few hours, all of the kits earmarked for this program were reserved by customers looking to try our latest and greatest devices. We’re now working quickly on how to make the Ultimate Test Drive available to even more people.”

Samsung does not have much time to replenish its stock. Apple is expected to announce new iPhones at a Sept. 9 event.

To get ahead of its rival, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6+ in August rather than stick to its regular September release schedule.
