Posted by The Hunger Games on Tuesday, June 9, 2015

On Tuesday, the first trailer for Mockingjay — Part 2, the final Hunger Games movie, was released. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), and Finnick (Sam Claflin) are all back for one last mission: to finish off President Snow and the Capitol.

Mild spoilers about Mockingjay — Part 2 follow.

One of the more difficult tasks Part 2 faces is that the source material is a little looser. Author Suzanne Collins crafts a tight story in The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, but Mockingjay is a little less structured. The Arena no longer exists, the rules have been vaporized, and the Games themselves are gone.

Instead, the story is about making it to President Snow and avoiding all kinds of traps and monsters along the way. While reading the book, it's a bit difficult to really grasp the geography and choreography of what's happening. And we get the first taste of how the movie will deal with that in the GIFs above and below, where we see a tsunami of black liquid filling the streets and threatening to drown Katniss's rebellion:

This brief scene calls back to threats and the danger of the Arena — a welcome sight for fans who missed the feel of the first two movies in Mockingjay — Part 1.

Things are back to ... normal?

The major cliffhanger of the first movie left us with a deranged, damaged Peeta freaking out and almost killing Katniss. That's all but solved in the new trailer, as it appears Peeta has come to his senses.

It looks like most of the other characters have also returned to being their regular selves. Effie (Elizabeth Banks) has her ornate, avian wardrobe back:

And Finnick is reunited with his love, Annie, in an idyllic, camera-ready wedding scene:

Of course, all this love and all of these feelings will raise the stakes of the final battle. And if there's anything the Hunger Games franchise has taught us, it's that we should be ready to see everything crumble to the ground.

Mockingjay Part 2 hits theaters on November 20, 2015.
