The propensity of cheek-based kisses in France, mapped

Combien de bises? The French are famous for their lover's kiss, but they're also common users of the kiss-on-the-cheek-as-greeting kiss. A map created by Bill Rankin at Radical Cartography (h/t Max Roser) shows regional differences:

Bill Rankin (2013)

The southern regions steer clear of kissing cheeks more than three times, while the northern regions are more likely to kiss four times. Rankin notes that the data is from a web survey, and should be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, don't expect to see a five-cheeked kiss on your next voyage to Cannes.
