With Mad Men's final episodes underway, the Game of Thrones season premiere waiting in the wings, and the new season of Real Housewives of New York on our DVRs, we're in that glorious sweet spot of spring/early summer television. And on Thursday, we got two gleaming reminders that there's even more good television coming our way: the trailers for Orange Is the New Black and True Detective were released.
In OITNB's third season, the Netflix gem throws Alex (Laura Prepon) back into Litchfield prison along with a new pack of inmates. And Litchfield vets like Red (Kate Mulgrew), Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba), and Sophia (Laverne Cox) are eager to welcome them to their new home:
The trailer looks like a bit of a departure from last season's dark, emotional season. There are laughs, dancing, and even a makeover. There's also just a hint of menace and sadness — Gloria (Selenis Leyva) threatening Sophia, for starters — that warns us not to fully trust this blanket of comedic security.
With HBO's True Detective trailer, on the other hand, there are no jokes. There's not even dialogue. There are just steely glares, shoves, punches, and pensive looks set to a haunting score:
OITNB returns to Netflix June 12.
True Detective premieres on June 21.
