Jon Stewart promises new Daily Show host Trevor Noah "will earn your trust and respect. Or not."

Trevor Noah, the comedian who has been chosen to replaced Jon Stewart as the host of The Daily Show, was heavily criticized last week for a group of jokes on Twitter that some saw as offensive and most saw as largely unfunny.

In his first show back since the controversy, Jon Stewart made a statement in support of Noah, saying, "I can say this, I think, without hesitation. Trevor Noah will earn your trust and respect. Or not."

His point, of course, is that comedy is a controversial business. As a host, Stewart too has fallen into and out of favor with some viewers periodically. He has gained respect from some people, and lost it from others. His hope is that viewers will give Noah an opportunity to regain their respect if he has lost it due to the tweets.

"My experience with him is that he is an incredibly thoughtful and considerate and funny and smart individual," Stewart said.
