'Saturday Night Live's' Smart Home Is No Nest

But it does feature Michael Keaton.

Peter Kafka covers media and technology, and their intersection, at Vox. Many of his stories can be found in his Kafka on Media newsletter, and he also hosts the Recode Media podcast.

A few years ago home automation was a super-niche concept. Now the notion of giving “smart” devices to your front door, or your furnace, or just letting them record your every move doesn’t seem so outlandish.

Google is even running TV ads mocking people who might feel uncomfortable with the idea.

Another sign that smart homes, or at least the idea of smart homes, is creeping into the mainstream: Last night’s “Saturday Night Live,” which featured Michael Keaton in a sketch about the concept — or, at least, the people who like the idea of the concept.

Warning/enticement: Bunch of butt jokes.
