State judge to take over Ferguson municipal court cases

  1. Missouri Judge Roy Richter, who had been serving on a state appeals court, will take over Ferguson municipal court cases starting March 16.
  2. The announcement comes after Ronald Brockmeyer, the current municipal judge, resigned.
  3. The Justice Department released a scathing report last week criticizing the Ferguson court system for disproportionately targeting black residents in police stops to raise money through fines and court fees for the city budget.
  4. Brockmeyer was named in the investigation as one of the key people driving the city's attempts to use police and the court system as a fundraising operation.
