Activision Shipped a Bunch of Copies of Destiny to Stores

The official word from videogame publisher Activision and developer Bungie is that their new game, the sci-fi shooter Destiny, is the “Most Successful New Video Game Franchise Launch of All Time.” About that: Activision is basing that claim on how many units it sold in to stores for day one, rather than sold through to consumers. But preorders were strong, and the sell-in number is indeed big: $500 million worth. Last year, Take-Two Interactive reported it raked in $800 million in sales of Grand Theft Auto V to gamers on Day One, though it’s not quite a fair comparison since Destiny is a new franchise rather than a sequel.
