Amazon shoppers in New York City now have a wider selection of products they can order for same-day delivery, the company announced today. And it’s increasingly looking like groceries could be the next category of items available for same-day delivery in the New York metro area.
Multiple sources tell Re/code that Amazon has been readying one if its New Jersey warehouses to store frozen and perishable foods. There have been hints at this preparation in the past, including a job listing for a senior produce specialist, but now more evidence is mounting.
One source, a grocery industry insider, says Amazon has been instructing some of its vendors to ship frozen and other types of food to the warehouse this month in preparation for launch. Separately, an Amazon employee told Re/code that the company has posted listings in one of its West Coast facilities for Amazon Fresh jobs to be located in the New Jersey warehouse. Amazon Fresh is the Amazon subsidiary that offers same-day and next-day delivery of groceries in Seattle, and several major metropolitan areas in California.
An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment.
While these tips are a strong signal that Amazon Fresh will soon launch out of a New Jersey warehouse, it’s not clear whether the outpost will be used to deliver groceries to New Jersey, New York City or both. The warehouse, believed to be located in Avenel, N.J., sits more than 25 miles outside of Manhattan. Still, Amazon currently stores some products available for same-day delivery in New York City even farther away than that.
