HP's Former Networking Head Bolts for CEO Job

Six months after being reassigned in one of Hewlett-Packard’s many recent management shake-ups, Bethany Mayer, the former head of the company’s networking division, has a new job.

On Thursday, Ixia, a small publicly held networking technology firm, said it had tapped Mayer as its next CEO. She’ll also be taking a position on its board.

Ixia sells network testing and validation equipment, and booked about $467 million in revenue last year. Its shares closed higher by more than one percent today.

At HP, Mayer ran what was seen as one of the company’s brighter spots, the $2.5 billion (2013 sales) networking unit that is composed largely of the assets of 3Com, which it acquired for about $2.7 billion in 2009. Sales in the unit grew by five percent during the three years that Mayer ran it.

In February, she was put in charge of a new business unit devoted to Network Function Virtualization.
