Misfit Integrates With Beddit Sleep Monitor as It Moves Beyond Wearables

The startup takes another step beyond Shine.

Misfit is integrating the Beddit Sleep Monitor with its mobile app, as the startup continues to expand its mission beyond the Shine health tracker.

Beddit is a thin sensor that goes under a bed sheet, transmitting information about heart rate, respiration and sleep cycles. The company claims to offer consumers insights into sleep patterns that can help them get a better night’s rest.

The partnership provides more sleep-related data than the Shine can, while allowing consumers to forgo wearing a device to bed, Misfit CEO Sonny Vu said in a statement.

It marks the Burlingame, Calif., company’s second partnership with a third-party hardware maker in recent weeks, following the announcement that its app will appear on the Pebble smartwatch.

In another hint at its shifting ambitions, Misfit dropped “Wearables” from the end of its name in recent press releases. It also added “ambient computing” to its areas of focus, a loosely-defined term for technology that fades into the background, responding to human needs in a more natural or passive way — much like the Nest thermostat or, say, the Beddit Sleep Monitor.
