Watch the trailer for "Dear White People"

The trailer for writer-director Justin Simien's Dear White People is out. The film, which got a special jury award at Sundance, follows the stories of four black students at a very prestigious, very white college as they explore racial identity in modern American society.

According to the film's website, "This film isn't about 'white racism,' or racism at all. Dear White People is about identity. It's about the difference between how the mass culture responds to a person because of their race and who they understand themselves to truly be. And this societal conflict appears to be one that many share."

Dear White People will be released in theaters October 17.  Watch the trailer here:
