You Can Now Hail an Uber From the Google Maps App

Google Maps today integrated Uber rides into its directions.

When the app is installed on your phone in two dozen of the larger cities where Uber operates, Google Maps will compare estimated travel time via Uber with transit and walking time. (This doesn’t include the amount of time an Uber will take to get to your location, though.) If you click to book, the Uber application will open.

It’s the first third-party app integration for Google Maps, which is installed on nearly every Android phone and is one of the most popular apps on iOS.

But it’s not as though we didn’t know Google liked Uber. Google Ventures took a $258 million stake in Uber last year, which rather unusually included a board seat for Google Chief Legal Officer David Drummond, who’s not an investing partner at the mostly independently operated firm.

As part of a larger feature release, Google Maps also added a local search element that competes with Yelp by filtering restaurants, bars and hotels by opening hours, rating and price.

The updates also included navigational guidance about which lane to be in to make a highway exit, as well as a quick way to save a map for offline usage.
