Real estate website Movoto put together this cool animation showing how state-level unemployment has varied over time:

You see here that the business cycle is mostly a nationwide phenomenon with things getting better everywhere or worse everywhere. But also that regional patterns change over time. The structural decline of the Michigan-based automobile industry is visible here, as is the transformation of the southeastern United States into an above-average unemployment rate.
