PayPal Parts Ways With Strategy Exec Who Went on Twitter Tirade

PayPal said Saturday that Rakesh Agrawal, a relatively new hire of the company, has left following a series of late-night tweets that among other things, insulted other PayPal executives.

“Rakesh Agrawal is no longer with the company,” PayPal said in a tweet on Saturday. “Treat everyone with respect. No excuses. PayPal has zero tolerance.”

A PayPal representative declined to say if he was fired or resigned, but the company’s tweet makes it clear that PayPal wanted his employment ended.

The sometimes rambling, since-deleted tweets included shots at the company’s VP of communications, who Agrawal called a “useless middle manager” and a “piece of” something that rhymes with twit. Agrawal had sent the tweets while on vacation at Jazz Fest in New Orleans.

Agrawal, a consultant who had joined PayPal less than two months ago, had attempted to do some damage control earlier in the day on Saturday.

“Last night I was using a new phone that I bought because I wanted to test experiences on Android,” he said in one tweet. “Those messages were meant for a colleague.”

In another he posted: “Note to self: don’t test a new phone when sleep deprived after working your ass off for 20 hours a day while on vacation.”
