Vantiv Buys Mercury Payment Systems for $1.65 Billion

Payments technology company Vantiv has acquired Mercury Payment Systems, a credit card processing company, for $1.65 billion, stepping in before Mercury could follow through on its plan to go public. The purchase provides a nice return for Silver Lake, which acquired a 62 percent stake of Mercury in 2010 for $450 million, according to a person familiar with the deal. That stake is now worth just north of $1 billion.
