How do you make money on YouTube?

First, get a lot of views on YouTube. A lot of views.

Then, start moving some of those views to a website you own, where you can sell ads and keep all the money you make, instead of sharing it with Google’s website.

Sound easy? Let’s let Smosh’s Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla explain how they did it. Here’s the full interview from our session with them at Code/Media, our first-ever Re/code event, held last week in Santa Monica.

You’ll need to bear with us for a few seconds when we get to the two parts where we played clips of their clips for the live audience. But it’s a rare chance to hear YouTube royalty explain how they got that way and what they want to do next.
