Will QuizUp's New Android Version Stave Off Download Drop?

The mobile trivia hit comes to Google Play.

Four months since its debut on Apple’s iOS, the venture capital-funded mobile trivia game QuizUp will be released today for Android on the Google Play store.

QuizUp, unlike many free-to-play mobile games, is not currently focused on making money, according to Thor Fridriksson, CEO of developer Plain Vanilla Games. The ability to challenge friends to quizzes and chat with them within the app also makes it a kind of social network, he said, so downloads are the goal.

So far on iOS, QuizUp has racked up some 10 million downloads, and is currently growing at about 50,000 new downloads per day, Fridriksson said. However, after about three months in the overall top-20 most-downloaded charts on iPhone, new downloads have been trending downward for the past month, per App Annie. That suggests the word of mouth on which a free multiplayer game like QuizUp depends has been waning.

Fridriksson said it’s normal for game downloads to drop off over time, and that the social aspects of QuizUp may have actually slowed its decline relative to other games. He didn’t make a formal prediction, but said the “feeling” at Plain Vanilla is that the introduction of an Android version, in addition to bringing in many new users on that platform, will reinvigorate iOS downloads as well.

Users on the different operating systems will be able to play against one another, and the company is planning to roll out the ability to test one’s wits against another user answering the same questions, but in another language. One billion QuizUp quizzes have been played in 230 countries to date, according to a press release.
