The iPhone Gets Holiday Bump as Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone Lose a Little Ground

On the hardware side, Apple and Samsung saw a boost, while HTC and BlackBerry saw a dip.


The holidays saw the iPhone gain ground in the U.S., while all the major rival smartphone operating systems lost a bit of market share, according to the latest ComScore numbers.

Apple saw its share of total smartphone subscribers reach 41.8 percent, up from 40.6 percent in September. Android is still larger, at 51.5 percent, but that’s down 0.3 percentage points from September. Windows Phone dropped two-tenths of a percentage point to 3.1 percent and BlackBerry dropped to 3.4 percent share, down from 3.8 percent in September.

On the hardware side, Samsung was Apple’s nearest rival, with 26.1 percent of the market, up 1.2 percentage points from September, followed by Motorola and LG, which were largely flat. HTC dropped to fifth place with 5.7 percent of smartphone subscribers, a drop of 1.4 percentage points in just three months.

ComScore also tracks app usage, which found Facebook the most popular single app, installed on 77.4 percent of smartphones. Google’s search and Google Play apps were the next most popular apps, followed by Pandora and YouTube.
