Startup Spritz Says Its Mobile Reading App Will Launch on Samsung Galaxy S5, Gear 2

Samsung hasn't yet announced the Galaxy S5, but the Boston-based company says its unique reading technology will be included.

Samsung hasn’t even announced its Galaxy S5 yet, but one app maker says its program will debut with the flagship phone, as well as on the just announced Gear 2 smartwatch.

Spritz is an app that aims to make reading on small devices easier by showing one word at a time.

“The time consuming part of reading lies mainly in the actual eye movements from word to word and sentence to sentence,” Spritz says on its website. “In addition, traditional reading simply takes up a lot of physical space. Spritz solves both of these problems.”

The idea of quickly streaming one word at a time has been around for a decade now. However, Spritz says it has a method for displaying that makes things, well, easier on the eyes.

Its twist on single-word reading involved centering the word on a common point so the eye can stay still and yet easily take in the entire word.

“Spritz takes eye movement out of the equation, allowing much more to be read in the same amount of time,” the company said. The app is capable of displaying anywhere from 100 words per minute to 1,000 words, depending on a user’s comfort level and preference. It currently supports six languages, including English, Spanish, French, German and Korean.

As for the Galaxy S5, Samsung has not officially confirmed the device will launch at Mobile World Congress, but it has sent out invitations to a media event Monday night, replete with references to the number five.

Boston-based Spritz said the first use of its technology will come in an email application that debuts with the Galaxy S5 and Gear 2 devices. The company said its technology is available for licensing for use within applications, websites, operating systems or devices.

A Samsung representative was not immediately available for comment.
