Mozilla, which continues to pitch its Firefox OS as a way to create low-cost smartphones, on Sunday announced a chip deal it said will allow for devices that can cost as little as $25.
The browser maker is partnering with Spreadtrum to create reference designs of such phones. Mozilla also used a press conference at Mobile World Congress to announce that Firefox OS is now in 15 markets on three devices from four different carriers.
This year Mozilla is looking to take Firefox OS to a number of new Latin American markets. Meanwhile, Deutsche Telekom plans to sell new models in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Macedonia and Montenegro.
China’s ZTE is also updating its Firefox OS offerings with two new models and said it expected to ship one million of the phones by the end of the year.
