Square Unveils Pricing for New Chip Card Reader

Jason Del Rey has been a business journalist for 15 years and has covered Amazon, Walmart, and the e-commerce industry for the last decade. He was a senior correspondent at Vox.

Square, the Jack Dorsey-led local commerce company, said it was starting to accept preorders for a new credit card reader that would allow businesses to accept a more secure type of credit card that will become ubiquitous in the U.S. over the next year. The readers, which will still accept traditional magnetic-stripe cards in addition to the new chip cards, will cost $29. Square will also sell a $39 card reader that attaches to its iPad-holder, Square Stand.
