Pinterest today said it now supports playable animated GIFs, which it called “maybe the greatest thing to have happened to the internet since emoticons.” But it’s only half-hearted support, as the distinctive looping format won’t autoplay on Pinterest as it does most everywhere else. Instead, the site will insert a play button. A spokeswoman explained, “It was a design decision to make browsing the grid more fluid.” Also, GIFs aren’t playable on mobile versions of Pinterest, yet.
