Professional networking site LinkedIn has named Pablo Chavez as its new vice president of global public policy and government affairs, the company said on Monday.

Chavez was Google’s senior director of public policy and government affairs for the past seven years, working on the search giant’s stance on issues surrounding privacy, intellectual property and free speech, among other areas.

He also spent nearly four years as senior counsel to the United States Senate Commerce Committee, as well as counsel to the office of Senator John McCain.

“We are excited to welcome Pablo to LinkedIn and know that his deep experience will be invaluable to us as we build our public policy presence,” a LinkedIn spokeswoman said.

Chavez will be based in Washington, D.C., where he currently resides. This is LinkedIn’s first D.C.-based hire.
