When I was hired for my first "real" job after college, my future boss told me that he hadn't been authorized to hire anyone full time, but that if I made myself invaluable, he would fight to keep me on.  I worked for him for 3 years at that company and a year at his next start up. 

When I  was hired by Conservation Minnesota in 2002 as the Program Coordinator, I continued with that advice and my position became a hodge-podge of responsibilities.  Currently, I maintain our database, our websites, our monthly financials, and fill in wherever I'm needed.

I really enjoy my position because of the variety and challenges it brings---in spite of what I might say on a daily basis.
