Here's a link to Planned Parenthood's efforts to support real sex education.

Before I learned to drive, my parents taught me how to change a flat tire.  That didn't mean they were expecting or encouraging me to drive over sharp objects or hit curbs, it simply meant they wanted me to be prepared. 

But my parents didn't teach me about birth control before I had sex.  Like so many other parents who choose to lodge their heads firmly in the sand, they hoped I'd abstain from sex.  And like so many other "good" church-going young women, I pledged I would.  But like a can of fix-o-flat, that was only a temporary solution - what I needed was real education.

Fortunately for me, I found Planned Parenthood.  They gave me the tools I needed to make sound decisions based on real life choices. 

I'm thankful that I've never had to deal with a sexually transmitted disease or an unplanned pregnancy -- and I owe a great deal to Planned Parenthood for that.  I seriously cannot imagine where I would be today without them.

The do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do control freaks of the world need to wake up and realize that "abstinence only education" is anything but education.  It's wishful thinking at best, and punishment (and imprisonment) of women at worst. 

Education is essential.  Arming young people with the facts, resources, and knowledge of potential consequences is the responsible thing for us to do if we expect them to become responsible adults.   Burying one's head in the sand is not the answer. 

The real answer is education, education, education.

KING JOSIAH

Read 2 Chronicles 34

            Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the LORD as he did–with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses.

            Josiah was only eight years old when his wicked father, Amon was assassinated and he became king. Josiah had never seen a copy of God's Word and yet, at the age of sixteen, he began to seek the God of his ancestor David. He destroyed many of the idols his father and grandfather had set up, and when he was twenty‑six years old, he began to restore the temple. One of the priests found a copy of the law given to Moses. When Josiah heard it read he said, "Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for the remnant in Israel and Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the LORD's anger that is poured out on us because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written in this book."  (34:21)

            Josiah's story illustrates that a young person who wants to know God will find Him, in spite of his background. Lord, make our home a place where young people will feel welcome and hear the truth of Your Word. Let it be a lighthouse in a dark world.
