RUBIN
Published: July 25, 2008

BAGHDAD — The American Embassy in Baghdad announced Thursday that it had expanded tenfold its program to help Iraqi employees of the American government here, who faced threats for their work, to obtain visas and ultimately citizenship in the United States.

Although the program was established by law in January, it has become a practical reality just in the last two to three weeks as guidelines have been finalized and the embassy has brought in staff members and started processing applications.

The decision is the latest step in the administration’s attempt to answer sharp criticism over its failure to help even those Iraqis who have made the American presence in Iraq possible by serving as translators and supervisors on embassy projects, for the American military and for the Agency for International Development. But critics in the refugee relief community noted that the State Department had promised several times that it would try to speed up the process, and that it had not come through.

State Department officials attribute the gap between words and deeds to a cumbersome refugee resettlement system that includes fingerprinting, job checks, name checks and interviews.

The program will allow 5,000 Iraqis to go to the United States for each of the next five years. Each person can take immediate family members, who include spouses and children. More distant relatives, including siblings, parents and grandchildren, can apply under another program. So the actual numbers emigrating will probably be considerably higher. The average Iraqi household is estimated to have about six people...

Full Story Here

Many situations that are being played out in Africa at the time are addressed in my book Portentum. Whether it is social displacement, racial disparity, governmental influences, coups, warlords, drugs and any other crimes for that matter, Portentum takes a look at it. The theme is placed on the central character as being a leader of people even though he is reluctant to take such a position based on philosophical background. The major events are echoed from reality into the science fiction that was written. There are supernatural elements that are injected that have a major impact as the book was based off of how African tribes have passed their history down from generation to generation in oral translations. The tribes that still adhere to old beliefs of reading signs from the heavens is a central theme as well. The book over all is a testimony to the great storytellers that never have had their stories told. It is a fiction of some truth to the beliefs of how the Earth and its denizens actually rely upon each other in order to maintain a fundamental relationship to one another.

U2 will not be the first group of musicians to re-make their music to the masses. They re-release their: Boy, War and October on July 22, 08. Some of their music are never release music before? I wonder is it because now this is the age of the Internet/Web? More venues to sell their albums? I like some of their songs like- Beautiful Day, Vertigo and some more...They had a 3-D movie for their tour. The albums are at best- recyclable tracks. New adds- a tad bit disappointment I am posting one of the least disappointing tracks from- Boy

1.

Time and time again, I hear from the anti-death penalty and anti-war proponents that Christians are hypocritical for supporting these two very necessary elements of civilized society. Mike Farrell accused Dennis Prager of licking his lips at the eminent death of convicted murderer Tookie Williams. The exact quote was, "You disgust me. You sit there licking your lips about the death of another human
being. You sicken me. You people are dragging us back into the caves." Dennis Prager is not a Christian but is a practicing Jew and so holds many of the same values since Jews and Christians study the same Holy Book until you get to the New Testament. Without getting into the debate over corporal punishment and the merits of the war option, I wanted to defend the Christian perspective that these are not the equivelant of murder.

Murder is the unjust taking of life and is entirely different in definition from killing in the scope of war and criminal justice. So, wherever you stand on the issues, please stop obfuscating the discussion with false charges against Christianity. Christianity is reliant upon the scriptures in the Bible (taken as a whole) for its standard of operation. And the scriptures support both venues (war and corporal punishment) for killing in both the Old and New Testaments. This is yet another case of non-Christians trying to judge Christians according to the Christian doctrines and standards when they have no understanding and very little knowledge of them but feel compelled to inform us of our doctrines. I, for one, am unwilling to allow the double standards to continue in our culture where secularists attempt to hold Christians to a standard to which they will not hold themselves. The irony here is that most believe they are holding to the principals taught in the same scriptures though they have never read them.

Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.
- Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, nicknamed "the wise" Roman Emperor, (121 CE - 180 CE)

An emperor of Rome, indeed the leader of any country up to modern times, would need to be sanguine about the future because the chances of his having his head detached from the rest of his body before that body was worn out stood exceedingly high.

What about old Julius? He certainly couldn't have used all of his weapons of reason when he allowed his formerly trusted ally Brutus and his gang to slay him. Actually, he likely did. To the best of his ability.

Julius was a very ill man, suffering from a great deal of pain and loss of his abilities of perception due to disease at the time of his death. It's entirely possible that he did the equivalent of falling on his sword, just to put himself out of misery. He knew he was too sick to rule Rome, to give it his best. Yet his honour forbade him from committing suicide, even if it be for the good of Rome. It's highly likely that he knew what was about to happen when he met privately with his "enemies."

In other words, we now know that Julius Caesar likely used the best of his mental faculties to do what was best for both himself and for Rome. History hasn't recorded the event of his death that way, but history has a way of relating what its teller wants to the story to be.

Marcus Aurelius must also have used his abundant mental faculties during his almost two decades as emperor of Rome (actually king, as Rome did not call anyone an emperor). His reign was the ultimate example of Pax Romana and his death brought turmoil as to who should lead the greatest empire the world had known until then (later the British Empire was greatest in history, covering one-quarter of our planet's surface at one time).

Though Christians were still persecuted in his time in theory, in practice they seldom were. Rome (undoubtedly a brutal regime in many ways, though hardly the worst in history) really was fairly peaceful during Marcus's reign. It would have required considerable weapons of reason to make peace so effectively that the period was given its own name.

So we turn to ourselves. Every media outlet in the western world and most in other parts of the world report almost daily about how bad conditions are in the world. I have heard many young people from North America say that they don't plan to have children because the world is just getting worse and they couldn't in all good conscience bring children into such tragedy.

The world must be getting worse, just listen to our media tell us. But it's not so.

No point in history has ever been so peaceful, with such a great percentage of people living long lives, healthier than their ancestors, in human history. The media always tell us that the world is a terrible place and leave us to conclude that the future will surely be worse. Neither is true.

Even during the dreaded Holocaust, when millions of Jews, cripples, people with much lower than average intelligence and people who simply pissed off the Germans were being exterminated, good things were happening elsewhere in the world. In the west, women who worked necessary jobs in factories earned a decent living and started a movement for equal rights for women that is still going on today. The Jews that survived got a country of their own a few years after the war, something they had not been able to accomplish for themselves for the previous 3000 years. The powers of the world came together as never before to defeat evil.

Just as Marcus Aurelius said that we will face the future as it comes to us with the same weapons of reason that we use today, we must use the weapons of reason we have available to us today. Or we will make the world a worse place to live, unsafe, unhealthy, unlivable for our children and grandchildren.

Our weapons of reason that help us to cope with today must make us realize that good things are happening in the world each day, even we if don't read about them. We must reason that just because our media report almost exclusively bad news does not mean that the world itself is getting worse. They just report what many people want to hear. Paris Hilton makes the news when she sneezes (and maybe her dress has a "wardrobe malfunction"), but we hear nothing about the millions of good people around the world and in our own communities who are doing good deeds and making good things happen every day.

It's important that we heed Marcus Aurelius's advice about the future. It won't be as bad as the fear mongers want us to believe (they make their living scaring people, remember, rather than getting "real" jobs). And the present isn't as bad as almost every source of information we have make it out to be.

We need to use our weapons of reason every day of our life, not just about the future. The more we refuse to find out information about what is really going on in the world and decline to use our powers of reason when we learn it, the worse the world will become and the worse our own lives will become.

Not learning and not thinking is what will make the world really worse. Bad guys can easily manipulate the thinking and voting of people who are ignorant and who don't want to think for themselves, who depend on others to think and to tell them what to think and believe.

We have the power within us, even those of us with the poorest of education and the most dire of backgrounds. It doesn't cost a thing to use it. We just have to try.

Before September, 7 years ago, there was a different war. Perhaps some of you remember it; The War on Drugs. We don't hear about the War on Drugs anymore, but not because it's been won. There are still plenty of drug users everywhere, their dealers are still making hoards of money, and Law Officials are still struggling to shut down massive narcotic operations. Still there is no more War on Drugs. Why is this? Because the War on Drugs is just words, and those words were once propaganda but are no longer.

The War in Iraq, we hear these words and they sound tired. Some of us remember that there was a War in Iraq once before, but it isn't considered. This is not another War in Iraq, because that other one was so short we hardly even managed to catch the exciting parts on the nightly news. This War, the War in Iraq is not just words, it is not propaganda, it stopped being so when thousands of soldiers didn't come home, or came home crippled. It stopped being just words when the last glimmers of the former prosperity of the 90's was submerged by market insecurity and rising fuel costs. They stopped being just words when the Weapons of Mass Destruction, were not there... their leader was dead... but still no one came home, soldiers were still fighting and dying, but all the propaganda associated with it was gone.

Osama Bin Laden, is a man. He is responsible for the deaths of many American citizens, and he is in hiding. He is not just words, but he is propaganda as well. America's people are united in their hatred of Osama Bin Laden, his continued existence justifies enormous public expenditure towards The War on Terror. His continued existence justifies the suspension of habeas corpus, it justifies torture, it justifies the annihilation of the Fourth Amendment Constitutional Rights, and it justifies a national suspicion and borderline hatred of the largest and fastest growing religion in the world. Now what would happen if he were caught?

In a Democratic nation, propaganda is necessary. It creates a unified cultural identity and gives the nation a cause. If there is no cause than a nation will tear it's self apart squabbling over taxes and the cost of pies. Propaganda creates the illusion of a mutual enemy which unites the people and keeps the nation functioning. Democracy empowers any individual with a strong enough passion to change the course of his nation, but that's the problem. A ship can only go one direction, and if there are multiple rudders all guiding it in different directions the ship won't go anywhere and something could break. So steps must be taken to ensure that those multiple rudders are at the very least not all working against each other.

I’d been looking forward to this film for weeks – in fact it was the
deciding factor for me to stay in New Zealand for the Auckland International Film Festival –
and I wasn’t disappointed. The scenery was as stunning as expected –
vast plains and simple nomadic settlements framed by dusky mountain
ranges on the great steppes of Mongolia. In this first part of the
planned trilogy I don’t know whether Director Sergei Bodrov challenged
the genre but he certainly made a good job of it.

Read my full review and more online at

Now, I am not a big movie watcher because there are just not a lot of movies out there worth watching, in my humble opinion. However, I do have a weakness for war movies, those that have some type of true story to them. War movies like "Saving Private Ryan," "Pearl Harbor," "Black Hawk Down," "Behind Enemy Lines," "Letters From Iwo Jima," and others.

Well, this past Friday night, one of my favorite war movies came on TNT. "We Were Soldiers" chronicles a group of soldiers that were put in an impossible situation during the Vietnam War. However, they ended up surviving and claiming a critical piece of ground for the U.S. It was won of the greatest victories during the war and it is an incredible and inspiring story to watch.

The reason that I bring this up is because as I watch movies like "We Were Soldiers" I am reminded of the awesome price that has been paid for our freedom here in America. Even today, we have men and women who are laying down their lives for the cause of freedom and I, for one, am eternally grateful for all those who have served our country in order that we might have the freedoms we have today. I fear that we don't say thank you enough to our men and women serving in our armed forces. I am grateful for my father and my grandfather (WWII veteran), who both served our country well. We live in a great land and it is all because of the men and women that God has raised up to fight for this great land we live in. So, I say thanks to all those who have served our country. And I say a special thanks to all those who laid down their own lives for our country. To God be the glory and may God continue to bless America.

I confess, George Tenet’s book on the CIA involvement in
counter-terrorism and the war in Iraq, At
the Center of the Storm is something I have been wanting to read for some
time and this week, I finally got to it. I would particularly recommend the
chapter entitled “The One Issue that Everyone Could Agree On” about the WMD
diagnosis in Iraq.

I have to say that I appreciated Tenet’s ability to take
blame and refuse to take blame based on whether he believed he deserved blame
or did not deserve blame. Taken as a whole, the book admits mistakes and yet at
the same time refuses to take bullets in the chest for the mistakes that others
made. And I do not get the impression that he is the sort of person to take
advantage of the mistakes of others when they admit them either. The book is
full of “This is why we thought what we thought. This is why we said what we
said. This is how we drew our conclusions.” Some of the impressions that I
finished the book with are as follows.

One, People cannot be blamed for sub-par work that they did
not receive the support or time to do and few things are more frustrating than
being so blamed. Secondly, it is always easier to see in hindsight what
questions you should have been asking if you only had the resources to ask a
few. But any of us who look at our own lives know that. Thirdly, Tenet makes it
clear that there are those in the Islamic world who are just as, if not more,
concerned with the ideology of al-Qaeda as we are. “There were a few countries
that got it long before 9/11” Tenet writes:

“The Jordanians, Egyptians, Uzbeks,
Moroccans, and Algerians always understood what we were talking about. It was ironic that, pre-9/11, we had more
success in getting help within the Islamic world than elsewhere.” P. 230

I also learned just how deeply offended those in the CIA are
at the notion that they catered their intelligence to executive expectations. Tenet
argues that the idea of regime change in Iraq was not something that was the result
of Bush and Cheney demanding supporting intelligence for.

“The focus on Iraq by senior Bush
officials predated the administration.
Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith, and Richard Perle were among 18 people
who had signed a public letter from a group they named the Project for the new American Century calling for Saddam's
ouster. It is often forgotten, but
regime change in Iraq was also the explicitly stated policy of the Clinton
administration, and was the goal of the Iraq Liberation Act, passed by Congress
in 1998. $100 million was appropriated
to the State Department for the express purpose of seeking an end to Saddam's
regime. . . . America's promise to topple Saddam remained the law of this land
from halfway through Bill Clinton's second term right up until US troops
invaded in March 2003.” P. 302

To the contrary, Tenet insists that the Iraq War was more
the result of the executive branch NOT relying on the CIA for its intelligence.
He says that key advisors to Bush and Cheney were developing their own
pseudo-CIA analysis.

“For many in the Bush
administration, Iraq was unfinished business.
They seized on the emotional impact of 9/11 and created a psychological
connection between the failure to act decisively against Al Qaeda and the
danger posed by Iraq's WMD programs. The
message was: we can never afford to be surprised again.” P. 305

“In looking back, there seemed to
be a lack of curiosity and asking these kinds of questions, and the lack of a
disciplined process to get the answers before committing the country to
war. And in hindsight, we in the intelligence
community should have done more to answer those questions even though not
asked. One of our senior analyst
subsequently told me that the impression given was that the issue of ‘should we
go to war’ had already been decided in meetings in which we were not
present. We were just called in to
discuss ‘how’ and occasionally the ‘how will we explain it to the public.’
There was never any doubt of the military outcome, but there was precious
little consideration, that I'm aware of, about the big picture of what would
come next.” P. 308

On several occasions, Tenet reiterates the problem with
funding side-CIA’s and not the institution itself.

“Feith’s team, it turned out, had
been sifting through raw intelligence and wanted to brief us on things they
thought we had missed. Trouble was,
while they seem to like playing the role of analysts, they showed none of the
professional skills or discipline required.
Fieth and company would find little nuggets that supported their beliefs
and seize upon them, never understanding that there might be a larger picture
that they were missing. Isolated data
points became so important to them that they would never look at the thousands
of other data points that might convey an opposite story.” P. 347

“Trained analysts would ask
questions like, ‘What is the source?
What do I know about the source?
Do they have the access that they claim?’” p. 356

At the heart of his message about mis-information in the
executive branch’s decision to go to war, is the fear that the Nitro of the unfounded
assurance of the President’s advisors was being combined with the Glycerin of qualified
guesses of the official intelligence services to produce the lethal combination
we know now was the decision to go to war. “Policymakers have a right to their
own opinions, but not their own set of facts.” Tenet states in several places.

And yet, he takes responsibility for the mistakes while
setting them in their historical context.

“Because of the impending vote on
the use of force, scheduled for early October, a production process that
normally stretched for six to ten months had to be truncated to less than three
weeks. Even that was not fast enough for
some of the unsympathetic members of Congress who wanted the NIE, delivered
almost instantly. . . . Had we started the process sooner, I am confident we
would have done a better job highlighting what we did and did not know about
Saddam's WMD programs, and we would have sorted out some of the inconsistencies
in the document. The lack of time,
however, did not relieve us of the responsibility to get the information
right. The flawed analysis that was
compiled in the NIE provided some of the material for Colin Powell's February
5, 2003, UN speech, which helped galvanize public support for the war. ” P. 323

“We allowed flawed information to
be presented to Congress, the president, United Nations, and the world. That never should have happened.” P. 383

One of the interesting insights I gained from my reading was
how impossible it is to predict what will happen in a certain region without
knowing what YOUR OWN government is going to do when it gets involved there.

“Our prewar analysis of postwar
Iraq was prescient. The challenge for
CIA analyst was not so much in predicting what the Iraqis would do. Where we ran into trouble was in our
inability to foresee some of the actions of our own government.” P. 426

I particularly appreciated his suggestion that the problems
of post-war Iraq were a surprise to the administration because they had
expected the appearance of a ‘Muhammad Jefferson’ who would do for Iraq what
Washington had done for post Revolutionary War America. The problem was, and
the CIA probably knew this as well as anyone, that Saddam had shot all the ‘Muhammad
Jeffersons’ in the course of his several decade regime.

All in all, a good book. It certainly will not heal the
wound in the hearts of those who have lost loved ones as a result of the lack
of good intelligence but it is a reminder that it could have been worse. It
could have been much worse …. Had there not been people willing to make it
their life’s passion to protect us.

Question for Comment: How are you at accepting blame when blame is deserved? How are you at defending yourself from blame when it is not?

The Jammed is an Australian movie that ventures deep into the world of people trafficking. Based partly in Melbourne but mostly in Sydney's notorious 'Kings Cross' district, the film follows the fortunes of three prostitutes - two Chinese and one Russian - who have each been trafficked into the sex trade. Without being gratuitous or voyeuristic, The Jammed takes a close and detailed look at the lives of these girls, and traces the path by which family poverty and debt lead to exploitation and violence. The film is very Australian, but hits the bullseye in its portrayal of people trafficking and as such travels well into the European scene. Trafficking is a global industry and like MacDonalds and Starbucks, it tends to follow pretty much the same rules wherever it
