Sports Events Without Beer? No Way!

Beer has long been associated to be the first drink that spectators would ask from people and from all indications, it is hard to imagine a sporting event such as the Daytona 500 or even Major League Baseball without them. The advertising and promotions that they get from it is certainly something and while cigarettes have already been junked, now beer?

The average fan would surely say “What is the world coming to?” Apparently this stems from the fact that we have all been used to seeing cigarettes and beer to be at the forefront of it all. Cigarettes have been banned due to its contribution to greenhouse gases and pollution but beer has so far been not categorized as harmful.

The speculations on beer being out....................

She came third in the 200 metres! My son also wandering around with a ribbon but my husband thinks someone just gave it to him as he hasn't seen him in any races yet.

By the way, the book keeps moving back and forth between saying "In Stock" and "Out of Stock" on Amazon. This seems to be the only web site that is doing that. I checked www.bn.com and it is fine. On my website, www.SoldOutSoWhat.net it is fine as well. I think it is just a glitch on Amazon. The first round of books went out today to everyone who participated in our "Pre-Release Special" as well as a few influential bloggers. I look forward to everyone's thoughts on the book!

No one except Leo believed that he would be able to hold off buying the new iPhone 3G for long, and true to form, by Saturday he had got himself a white-back 16GB iPhone 3G. The main new hardware features includes 3G and GPS, and improved speakers. There is no 3G coverage in Petaluma for Leo, and there are no turn-by-turn directions for the GPS. According to Leo, what makes the new iPhone is the version 2 software, and the new App Store.

Leo talks about some of the new apps, including the iPhone app from Omnifocus, the Enigmo game, Aqua Forest, location-based Loopt, a New York Times app, Pandora, and AOL Radio.

But still no voice dialing, and no cut and paste.

TWiTLive Viewership
Since Leo's coverage of the iPhone 3G launch, viewership of TWiTLive has gone up about 30%.

Did You See That?

Did you see the home run derby the other night on FOX? It was literally one for the ages. Now, I have not watched a lot of Major League Baseball this year, but I always enjoy watching the home run derby and the All Star game. And this year they unleashed an encouraging story in Josh Hamilton. Although he did not win the derby, probably due to the fact that he wore himself out in round one, he did set a record for the most home runs in one round. It seemed like everyone in New York Yankee stadium was pulling for him. I believe he ended up getting more press coverage than Justin Morneau, who was the player who actually won it.

If you haven't heard Josh Hamilton's story you are missing out because this is a man who has literally hit rock bottom in his life and has been brought back up and he gives God all the glory for where he is at today. As a matter of fact, at the end of the derby when he was being interviewed by FOX in front of the world and in front of Yankee stadium and he gave glory "to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." What beautiful words those were to hear right before I went to bed that night! You don't hear words like that come out of professional players mouths that often. It is usually something we don't want to hear. Nonetheless, I was pleased to hear what Josh had to say because he has become a hero to many of us.

This is a man who almost ruined his career, by his own admission, through drugs and alcohol. He even said that he regrets every tatoo that he has on his body, and there are a lot of them. Now, I am not here to discuss whether or not we should have tatoos, but I personally was glad to hear that he regrets every one he has, which was obviously put on his body before he met the Savior. Nonetheless, it was an inspiring story to hear in order to remind us that Jesus is still changing lives no matter how nasty they may be. And who knows the impact Josh Hamilton is going to have because of the work that Jesus has done in his life. To God be the glory.

Ok, so, apart from that knee being ~~axed~~ fixed, I still have some issues with running. Mainly, it kills the bones in my feet. Mr. Textile Athlete thought it might be because of my sneakers, so off to the shops we went for a last, desperate stab at fitness:

"May I help you?"

"Um, yeah. I have these 8-9 year old sneakers and..."

"o_O"

"...probably like 6-7 year-old sneakers that make my feet hurt while jogging"

And from there on I got a lecture about how not to kill your feet and change your jogging shoes at least every second year and madam should most certainly take care of her feet and it's a bloody wonder you still have bones left in your body and why do you damage yourself like this woman!

And then I glanced meaningly over at the prices of those damn sneakers and pointed out that it needen't make my coffee which probably is what these things do at that price. And he sold me a nice pair of sneakers at an okay price and I stopped bitching. After this, Sami made me get myself a pair of specially made Foot Balance soles for my sneakers. SO! If the bitch ain't running it most certainly is not because of inappropriate footwear!

I have one concern though. All the sneakers where a bit gay, you know? With the silver and the almost-but-not-quite-neon and the breathing glittery material and all that. Seems like Nike, Adidas and Asics had a specific type of customer in mind for this season.

The flaming homosexual.

And now I'm the not so proud but very comfortable owner of a pair of silvery (yeah, you read it right), poison green (still right), net-material (I kid you not) sneakers with Foot Balance soles.

Now I only have to get used to running in the dark.

The New Yankee Stadium: History Repeating Itself?

April 18, 1923, Babe Ruth hit the first home run at the Yankee Stadium, a three-run moon shot that propelled his team to a 4-1 victory over his former team, the Boston Red Sox . This would serve as the first of the many career defining moments that would happen in the historic Yankee Stadium.

Normally, baseball teams played in parks or in fields. However, this is not just any team this is the Yankees we are talking about. Home to numerous Hall of Fame inductees and a host of great moments, it’s only fitting that this historic place is called as a stadium – a place where legends are made.

Located at East 161st Street and River Avenue in the Bronx, memories of greatness will always fill the air inside Yankee Stadium and if there is one thing that is missing in the New Yankee Stadium is that it lacks the memories and the history that its predecessor had. However, it is history that states that the Yankees will inevitably be great again.

According to ballparks.com:

The late 60’s were characterized by the decline of the Yankees and the rise of the expansion Mets. Hosting a mediocre team in a decaying neighborhood caused the Yankee Stadium to become old and obsolete in the early 70’s.

Renovations were made in 1966 and 1967, but more than that was needed. In 1972, the team sold their stadium to the city and signed a thirty year lease. During the 1974 and 1975 seasons, the Yankees played at Shea Stadium while the city made major renovations to Yankee Stadium. The many steel columns which supported the roof and upper decks were removed, and the upper decks were cantilevered over the lower deck. The original roof and its famous copper facade were removed and replaced with a smaller, more modern roof. The facade was replicated above the new scoreboard which ran the entire length of the bleachers.

The renovated Yankee Stadium opened with much fanfare in 1976. The “new” stadium since then, has always been packed and is a prime place where businessmen would stack and distribute their color brochure prints and other brochure printing materials.

The Yankees wasted no time in giving back to their fans as the team appeared in the World Series in each of the next three years, winning the fall classic twice. Players like Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter and Ron Guidry picked up where Mantle and Berra left off a decade earlier. The Yankees have always fielded winning teams since their ballpark was renovated. This is capped by appearing in six World Series from 1990 - 2000 winning four of them.

This cycle seems to be repeating itself with the Yankees struggling in this new millennium. However, the change in stadium also coincided with the change in ownership and a change in philosophy.

George Steinbrenner passed ownership to his sons Hank and Hal. With the New owners in hand, the organizational philosophy seems to have changed as well. Just last offseason, the Yankees declined on a trade that would have handed them former AL CY Young winner Johan Santana in exchange for their young prospects.

The Yankees under their father George would have grabbed the deal and have Santana in Yankee uniform at the soonest possible time. The Yankees, as recent years would prove, preferred to build through free agency rather than cultivate talent in their farm system.

However, the new ownership held on to their young pitchers and decided to build the future of the Yankees through their farm. It’s too early to judge whether this move of the Yankees will pay off or not. As it is today, halfway in the season, the New York Yankees are mired in third place in the AL East.

But if you will base things from history, the Yankees will definitely be great again – the only question is when.
