I did a bad thing. You know when I start my post out that way, I usually mean it. This past weekend was kind of crazy.

We'll start with Friday. I was so tired and out of it on Friday. I literally had no motivation and didn't want to do anything at all. I got a bad haircut and was upset and on top of that, just couldn't shake that I want to sleep, I'm PMSing and might take a hatchet to some guy's head feeling so my friend B suggested we get stoned and go see "Pineapple Express." What a fabulous idea! We sat in front of these 12 year olds who had eaten pot brownies - we fit right in. We ate a tub of popcorn, some candy, washed it down with soda and then went back to her place to watch more movies and smoke more pot. I always think of Carrie and the fried chicken. Anyway, the AE called and wanted to see if I would join him and his buddies at Lion's Pub. I declined and said I would be too embarassed to meet anyone in my state. Eventually, he agreed to come over. We sat around with B for a bit and then went up to my room. We made out again but nothing below the belt - he was pretty drunk and sort of passed out anyway. The next morning, I was meeting a friend early to go on a long run so the AE and I woke up pretty early, made out some more, tried to prolong our time together and then he walked me downstairs so I could meet my friend outside. We hugged and parted ways. I ended up running about 14 miles of pure hills that day, then came home showered quickly and ran errands. I never really ate anything - a very important part of the story that's about to unfold.

After I've run all my errands, I realize its way past time for me to be in the shower getting ready to meet up with the girls for Y's bachelorette party. The girls arrive, we trek over to Tres Agaves and the minute we get there - tequila shots. Y wants to do family style and no one objects (I should have). Most of the food is stuff I don't really eat (meaning pork or beef in it) and so I definitely don't have enough in my stomach after running all morning and then well, drinking too much. After a very fun dinner complete with Truth or Dare and my crazy friend J getting on all 4's and barking at another girl, we headed over to Supperclub. At some point, I began texting with the AE to come and meet us. Apparently, he tries to come but my directions are incoherent. After driving around for an hour, he gives up and goes home. I get drunker. We leave and go to Swig and the texts, phone calls continue (although I don't really remember). I was so drunk that I ate a pizza sandwich - wtf is that? No one really knows. My friends described it as a cross between a burrito, pizza and a sandwich - yes, I know, GROSS.

Anyway, I wake up in the morning in my dress, check my phone and realize that I've sent some weird texts to the AE - many of them telling him he's lame for not meeting up, saying I was glad I hadn't slept with him yet, etc. OH FUCK, OH FUCK, OH FUCK is all I can think. I change out of my dress and take my pounding headache back to bed next to my friend T. They wake up and tell me it will be ok - they heard me talking to him and it didn't sound so bad. Fuck. I text him first thing saying I'm really sorry and embarassed. I don't hear back from him for hours.

Eventually, I'm supposed to go to this pool party in Napa with my friend/co-worker KB. She arrives with her guy friend J, the old rich dude, and her girl friend L. J, the old rich dude drives us all up there - we pull up to this incredible house - full of old rich dudes and SF socialite women with big boobs and European fashion statements. I'm instantly thinking, "one of these things is not like the other..." Anyway, I lay out, drink margaritas with the girls and try and nurse my hangover from the night before and hide my shame from scaring the AE from my life. I send him a few more texts, attempts to save face. And nothing. Finally, on our way home, I get a text from him - its almost 7 pm saying he was away from his phone all day. I say, ok, cool. He emails me the next day saying sorry we didn't catch up, going on vacation, had a crazy day, etc, etc. Let's get a drink when I get back, cool? Although he emailed, said thanks for the apology and that he was over the drunk texts, not mad, etc, I am not sure I believe him. I sort of think I ruined things and I understand. It just sucks because I was really beginning to like this one.

Dear Readers,

I love living out of a suitcase, which is why I haven’t unpacked. Not because I might leave at a moments notice but because I just returned from San Francisco with a whole lot of new “back to school” goodies and like all new school supplies the perfection might wear off as soon as I unpack them. Let’s see… plaid skirts, multi-colored cardigans, metallic sneakers, oversized rhinestone coronets with layers of chains, leggings, freshly cropped hair, dark polish, self tanner, purple eye shadow, and in honor of Labor Day a white ruffled blouse. Just looking in my suitcase I imagine a glimpse of a mannequin wearing pearls the size of beach balls like I saw on my trip.

September is a significant month in fashion. It is the kick off time for fashionistas in NYC. Fashion is a culture, an affirmation of our presence, our uniqueness, and sometimes it takes going away to a new city to re-invent yourself. Just add a hat and voila, you’re a new you!

I urge you to take advantage of September. For starters make a list. Pick up a few items such as self-tanner, purple or forest green colored eye shadow, dark polish, chop your hair, and comb through some conditioner. And now that you’re looking good, shop for a schoolgirl look because it will sharpen and update any wardrobe. The work you put in now will pay off big time.

Finally, learn to relax and enjoy the process. A stroll through the shoe department is utterly intoxicating, there’s nothing like the waft of fine leather.

Love,
Moni

P.S. Watch for the opening of CB Couture Boutique on September 7th, and did I mention that’s also my birthday?

I’ve been talking about all these remakes of late, but one I forgot to mention is a biggie: that time the Germans remade The Love Boat. There are a few differences: Das Traumschiff (it is not called Das Love Boot as The Simpsons once parodied) has been going since 1981 and it has never, unlike the original American version, been shot in a studio. Each season is short because of the lavish location filming—trust the Germans to take a formula and improve on it no end. I think they also managed to keep the cruise director off cocaine.
The title sequence from the below 2007 special in San Francisco (found on YouTube) is awful, and set in the very un-German Arial Rounded, but even the late Aaron Spelling didn’t beat the money that has been poured in to the 50-plus episodes since the 1980s.
The Germans’ approach to state TV is: if it works, and it pulls in viewers week after week, then don’t tinker and ruin it. Tatort has been going for God knows how long.
I prefer my Alarm für Cobra 11, still the perfect car-chase cop show.

Earlier tonight we were watching the Olympics (as per usual), and the
Men's 1500 meter track and field event came on. Jordan was already
asleep (well... in bed, at least), but Quinn was still up.

Quinn's
always asking me who we're supposed to cheer for. Usually I'll say "the
guy in the red" or "the white team" or whatever, but in the running
event it wasn't so clear cut because there were lots of guys in each
color, and in blends of colors, and they're all running in a little
clump.

So I said "I'm for the guy from the United States." In
trying to identify who that was, I said "the black guy there on the
outside." In the conversation that followed, it became clear to me that
Quinn genuinely has no idea what a "black guy" is- as opposed to, say,
a guy wearing black. Quinn will be 4 in October.

Ryan and I are
both white (sort of I guess- our last name is Egyptian), but Quinn has
been around plenty of black guys (and gals) in his life. There were 2
black girls in his class last year, in fact. I've been trying to
provide the boys with as multi-cultural an experience as I can
(including different music experiences), and it caught me off guard
that Quinn wasn't even familiar with the concept that there are
different races of people.

After wondering for a moment whether
I should try to explain it, I decided that he should at least be
familiar with the general difference between "black" and "white." So I
started talking about dark skin and light skin. The guy from Great
Britain was an excellent outlier book-end of a "white" guy and and the
American (Sudanese) guy's skin was a good book-end of "black" on the
other end... but even in trying to explain it I ran into difficulties
because there were plenty of in-betweens- e.g., the Moroccan guy. I'm
not even sure whether the Moroccan guy is "black" or "white."

Finally,
I just had to smile. Maybe it's the San Franciscan in me, but I was
pleased. Quinn truly is innocent to the whole concept of racism, or
even differentiating individuals based on the color of their skin. It
never occurred to him to think of the girls in his class, or their
parents, as any different from anyone else.

Hopefully, it's the voice of a new generation.

I spotted Big Foot this weekend but we'll get to that later. The weekend was a little crazy. Friday night, B had some friends in town so we took them out on the town - ok, really just Chestnut St - but the town to us. We started with wine in the ole apartment and then made our way to Delaney's (AKA Douche Bag Central), Horseshoe and eventually Monaghan's (or at least that's what I remember). At Horseshoe I ran into the short guy who took me on all those great dates that I can't see myself ripping his clothes off and he said something strange - basically asking if I'd seen his friend lately - I said, no, not since the dinner party - he said, I saw you two are friends on Facebook - and I'm thinking, ok, stalker, we are but what does that even mean? And the thing is, I really haven't seen his hot friend - minus on Facebook - but I'd love to see him. God, he was hot.

Saturday, I woke up at 8 - yes 8 am - and went running over to Tiburon with my friend C. It was supposed to be 14 miles but turned into 18 because we got lost. So typical! I did remarkably well given the amount I drank the night before. Actually, it felt pretty good. When we finally arrived in Tiburon after our slight detour to Corte Madera, we decided to lunch at Sam's. Problem was - the wait for a table was 1.5 hours - tell that to two girls who just ran 18 miles and you're bound to get punched. Anyway, we sat down and had a drink while we waited - but we only had $100 in cash between the two of us. I'm the dumbass who didn't have enough foresight to bring enough cash - I only brought $20 - I'm dumb. So C was my sugar mama that day. Anyway, by the time we got our table we felt drunk - one drink on an empty stomach can do that to you. We ordered a little too much food and then when the bill came, we realized we couldn't leave a tip because we didn't have enough for the ferry home. Oops. So we ran. We layed in the grass for about an hour napping after lunch while waiting for the ferry home. That was nice except now I am peeling and sunburned - shit.

Anyway, went out Saturday night - nothing terribly exciting. Met up with some friends, pretty much fell asleep on the bar.

Sunday was crazy. Had to interview roommates from literally 3-9 pm. About 18 people showed up - 3 of them were girls. Out of all the people, I narrowed it down to 6 and now I am narrowed down to 3 and am having trouble making a decision! I have one girl (the only girl I liked) and 2 guys...what to do? Sometime during roommate interviews, the AE texted me to see if I wanted to catch a movie with him and his friend and his gf - I told him I wasn't able to because of roommate interviews until 9. At 9 I got another text asking if I wanted to grab a late night drink - I said, sure. He said he'd come somewhere close to my place so I suggested Delaney's. We met up, had a couple of beers and then he walked me home. He asked to come up and use my bathroom and I said, sure. We sat in my room talking and then started making out. He spent the night but nothing happened - nothing below the belt - just a lot of kissing. We cuddled all morning - I didn't want to get up - it was nice lying there with him. He takes up most of the bed because he's huge, he snores and he has size 14 feet - hence, why I said I spotted Big Foot this weekend.

The only thing that has me really thinking and re-thinking and over analyzing this situation is that he's 35 years old and mentioned to me on Sunday that he had recently been through a break-up - about 6 months ago to be exact - and they lived together - and the reason they broke up is because she wanted to get married and he didn't. Oh great, just what I need - another commitment phobe or to be someone's rebound fuck. UGH! And I really LIKE this one! UGH UGH UGH! So I can't stop thinking about that - what if that's all it really is?

Went to the show by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes with the supporting act of Black Fag, the cover band of Black Flag. It was 21+ show and they played lots of songs including Over The Rainbow, Summertime, End of the world and Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. The last time I saw them it was SUMMER SONIC 2005 in Tokyo and it was a gigantic stadium that had 20k attendees (the head-liner was Beastie Boys and Green Day). The Gimme Gimmes is not clearly the type of the band to play in the huge venue like that. Thee Parkside is just a bar and it only had 150 people or so. It was a great venue.

the city happens to be 60% renters so just imagine if those were all
renewable..). I am excited for SF and I
hope that the rest of the world will be soon to follow.

As mentioned in previous posts, I’m almost done with school. That’s pretty cool in all. I have spent way to long not being officially certified as educated and I’d like to start being that. Being in Ventura has reminded me that it has been five years since I graduated. Five more years till I can recreate Grosse Pointe Blank. Maybe I should become a trained killer. I don’t want to write about future careers anymore for awhile.

I want to write about where I live. I live in San Francisco. I moved there for school and with hopes that the weather and the political environment would make me happy. I also was looking for some changes in my personal life. Well, over all The City has lost it’s charm. I spend most of my time alone. In San Francisco, alone is my default state, not just something I’m choosing.
I really miss interacting with people. When I visit Ventura, I’m usually craving just being in the presence of other people.

I allege that it is too easy for me to live in San Francisco and be alone. Maybe it’s the nature of transferring into a college, or maybe it’s just the way big cities work.

I intend to leave San Francisco once I have my degree.

I have no idea where I’ll go. Maybe move to a new city and settle down with someone? Or just find a new way of life?

I definitely don’t regret moving to San Francisco. I regret not being better friends with all the people I know in Ventura. I feel like I’ve missed a million opportunities at being easily happy. I don’t think it’s any more fruitful to struggle and work hard for happiness. I think you should be as happy as possible all the time with everyone.

after years of maintaining a closed no photography policy. Directly
because of this change in policy, I decided to purchase a family
membership in order to support the museum, both with my artistic energy
and financially. I was excited to begin spending regular time exploring
and documenting the museum.
...
After purchasing my family membership and
visiting the museum today I was forcibly thrown out of the museum by
two museum security guards at the direction of the Director of Visitor
Relations Simon Blint...

FriendFeed had three very impassioned conversations:

1. Thomas Hawk's FriendFeed discussion

2. Jeremiah Owyang's FriendFeed discussion

Thomas Hawk's skewering of Simon Blint: Thomas is a community leader
(and photo site CEO) he needs to wield his power with responsibility.
Tagging Simon Blint and "*sshole" has damaged his online reputation for
years on end, and will likely impact job screenings.

3. Cyndy's FriendFeed discussion

When FriendFeed Creates a Mob

SFist covered the incident (thanks, Brock!)

...Hawk talked to Blint who (allegedly) told him "he did not care" and
that he needed to "protect" his employees -- employees that might
appear in my photographs." Hawk goes on to say, "I was not shooting
with a tripod. I was not shooting with a flash."

Was Blint, in fact, being an *sshole? Was Hawk putting up a pissy
fight, which led to his ejection? We don't know yet. But we think banning of any type of photography is inane, especially if you work in the arts.

But what say you? Should photographers be subject to this kind of harassment? Or does Blint deserve a serious tongue lashing?

BoingBoing didn't miss the story.

Robbo sez, "Thomas Hawk was forcibly removed from the San Francisco
MOMA by two security guards at the direction of the over-zealous Simon
Blint, Director of Visitor Relations. How ironic is that?
Why? Taking photos in the atrium.
SF MOMA policy on this? Their own web site specifically allows
photography in the atrium. Hawk had also previously confirmed this
personally with Thea Stein in the Marketing and Communications
Department of the museum...

Consumerist covered it as well.

Despite What Their Website Says, Taking Pictures In San Francisco's Museum Of Modern Art Is Cause For Ejection

The Guardian covered it. Oh dear, it crossed the pond. Apologies for any confusion, and perhaps this would be a point of clarification, i.e. if photography of any "exhibited" piece is disallowed, say so. Perhaps discuss stairs, hallways, elevated walkways, etc., as these are not "galleries," may not be part of the "atrium" and yet provide unique vantage points from which to take photos (of the architecture.)

FYI, even though I understand it's not a Thomas
v. Simon issue: an anonymous commenter claims to have worked with Simon

I can attest to his short temper and general lack of people skills. He
found no trouble in bullying the teens who worked there."

"Director of visitor relations" is a poor match for his behavior. He
should apologize, resign, or try to otherwise repair the situation. Since it's a PR-related job, he seems uniquely unfit and uneducated about the causes and effects of negative PR. He'll probably have a "rich learning experience" though.

dianachen and ScribeGuy, I'm glad you signed up to SFist just to comment about the incident. It's too bad Blint or other SF MoMA person hasn't spoken up. So,
thanks for giving your opinions. Someone else who has worked with Blint
did not have kind things to say. I find the less agreeable sites engage in character assassination on
both sides. Perhaps you aren't finding the best conversations.

RobinSF, you are a piece of work. Photography w/o flash is allowed
in the permanent collection, atrium is OK always, if you use a flash
in the atrium it must be a hand held point-and-shoot. While the policy
is imprecise and ambiguous, you manage to completely miss the intent.
Can YOU read? Do YOU know flash photography can damage the pieces? Do
you seriously think they are mandating the use of a flash in the
atrium? Does the point-and-shoot restriction refer to the Atrium, or
the use of flash? Go ahead, rant some more, it's entertaining.

of Hawk's or Blint's character, I think the real issue stems from
trumped up "security" meant to keep us "safe."

All sorts of power-tripping security guards and police have become
accustomed to people immediately accepting restricted rights with the
magic words "post 9/11."The reason it is such a hot-button issue is that most people have
not pushed back against the Patriot act and all it (theoretically)
allows law enforcement to restrict.

Ok, ok, the San Francisco frozen film festival was a month ago but I
haven't had time to do anything with the footage we shot until now.

So
here's a video recap of all the awesome fun that was had at the screening and afterparty. There's a little
of the post-screening Q&A plus samples of the performances by Drown
Radio, Nomad and MC Lars. I kept putting off making this since I dreaded the thought of uplaoding a decent looking video to youtube only to see its quality turned to gray mud like clips I've uploaded in the past. I've tried a billion different tricks to get my videos to look better on that site but I've never been able to get decent results. When you take a 800MB video and smash it down to 80MB so you can make youtube's 100MB limit, you're going to lose a lot of quality.

Or so it was back in the stone ages! Youtube has now lifted its 100MB cutoff and videos can now be over a GB big. The "standard version" of this video looks pretty crappy but if you click through and watch it directly on youtbe, you can select the "Watch in High Quality" version. The difference in the quality has blown my mind. It's amazingly sharp. Youtube, once again you have managed to rock my world, throughly.
