if I wasn't leaving for New York in a few short months, I would be quitting my job. Unfortunately I love what I do and even like what the company stands for but watching my boss run off a lot of talent and generally run the place into the ground.

Well, SNCAT it has been good knowing you. if your on the board you should pull your head out and fire Les since he is ruining the place. I know he didn't come into a pretty situation but he sure isn't making it any better.

I guess you might want to know where I work. SNCAT or Sierra Nevada Community Access Television is a PEG(public. education. government) channel. Yes we are the people at those city council meetings that are on TV. We also produce several programs for the local goverment agencies like the cities or reno, sparks and formerly Washoe county (see Les). What the really cool part is that we also have free public facilities. That means you can come in (we train you for a small fee) and use our video equipment to produce your show and we will air it. Really there isn't a catch. You make it we air it. You can also use your own equipment and we will air it too.

We also aren't afraid to have a little fun.

Nevada is a Wasteland

This campaigning thing is hard. What a long day. I drove for maybe 12 hours or more and still only made it halfway to Denver.

I'm somewhere in Utah, just short of Salt Lake City. Need to get up early tomorrow and head out so I can get to campaign headquarters in Thornton, CO, in the afternoon. And as if it wasn't bad enough, I even lost an hour crossing the border from Nevada to Utah (new time zone).

The drive up to Reno was fine. Stopped in Reno to stretch and get lunch. Figured I'd check out a circus show at Circus Circus (love those Chinese acrobats), but there were no shows that early. And no, I didn't play any blackjack, though i did consider throwing down $10 to see if I could win enough for lunch.

Then the long, boring trek through Nevada on I-80. Absolutely nothing there. I read a sign at some rest stop saying how so many pioneers had died trying to get to California, riding through that desert.

Had dinner in Elko, then at least had the entertainment of the debate (and the new Bob Dylan album, which is great) for the rest of the ride. If you went through all of Obama's earmarks and the worst one you could fine was a $3 million (pennies in earmark numbers) project for a planetarium (oooh -- how dare he try to educate kids about space), why would you go through with the attack?

Had I been playing the McCain drinking game, I surely would have crashed and killed several innocent people. The guy said "My Friends" at least twice in every single answer.

A few tents cropped up hard by the railroad tracks, pitched by men left with nowhere to go once the emergency winter shelter closed for the summer.

Then others appeared — people who had lost their jobs to the ailing economy, or newcomers who had moved to Reno for work and discovered no one was hiring.

Within weeks, more than 150 people were living in tents big and small, barely a foot apart in a patch of dirt slated to be a parking lot for a campus of shelters Reno is building for its homeless population. Like many other cities, Reno has found itself with a "tent city" — an encampment of people who had nowhere else to go.

From Seattle to Athens, Ga., homeless advocacy groups and city agencies are reporting the most visible rise in homeless encampments in a generation.

Nearly 61 percent of local and state homeless coalitions say they've experienced a rise in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began in 2007, according to a report by the National Coalition for the Homeless. The group says the problem has worsened since the report's release in April, with foreclosures mounting, gas and food prices rising and the job market tightening.

"It's clear that poverty and homelessness have increased," said Michael Stoops, acting executive director of the coalition. "The economy is in chaos, we're in an unofficial recession and Americans are worried, from the homeless to the middle class, about their future."

The phenomenon of encampments has caught advocacy groups somewhat by surprise, largely because of how quickly they have sprung up.

"What you're seeing is encampments that I haven't seen since the 80s," said Paul Boden, executive director of the Western Regional Advocacy Project, an umbrella group for homeless advocacy organizations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Calif., Portland, Ore. and Seattle.

The relatively tony city of Santa Barbara has given over a parking lot to people who sleep in cars and vans. The city of Fresno, Calif., is trying to manage several proliferating tent cities, including an encampment where people have made shelters out of scrap wood. In Portland, Ore., and Seattle, homeless advocacy groups have paired with nonprofits or faith-based groups to manage tent cities as outdoor shelters. Other cities where tent cities have either appeared or expanded include include Chattanooga, Tenn., San Diego, and Columbus, Ohio.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development recently reported a 12 percent drop in homelessness nationally in two years, from about 754,000 in January 2005 to 666,000 in January 2007. But the 2007 numbers omitted people who previously had been considered homeless — such as those staying with relatives or friends or living in campgrounds or motel rooms for more than a week.

In addition, the housing and economic crisis began soon after HUD's most recent data was compiled.

"The data predates the housing crisis," said Brian Sullivan, a spokesman for HUD. "From the headlines, it might appear that the report is about yesterday. How is the housing situation affecting homelessness? That's a great question. We're still trying to get to that."

In Seattle, which is experiencing a building boom and an influx of affluent professionals in neighborhoods the working class once owned, homeless encampments have been springing up — in remote places to avoid police sweeps.

"What's happening in Seattle is what's happening everywhere else — on steroids," said Tim Harris, executive director of Real Change, an advocacy organization that publishes a weekly newspaper sold by homeless people.

Homeless people and their advocates have organized three tent cities at City Hall in recent months to call attention to the homeless and protest the sweeps — acts of militancy, said Harris, "that we really haven't seen around homeless activism since the early '90s."

In Reno, officials decided to let the tent city be because shelters were already filled.

Officials don't know how many homeless people are in Reno. "But we do know that the soup kitchens are serving hundreds more meals a day and that we have more people who are homeless than we can remember," said Jodi Royal-Goodwin, the city's redevelopment agency director.

Those in the tents have to register and are monitored weekly to see what progress they are making in finding jobs or real housing. They are provided times to take showers in the shelter, and told where to go for food and meals.

Sylvia Flynn, 51, came from northern California but lost a job almost immediately and then her apartment.

Since the cheapest motels here charge upward of $200 a week, Flynn ended up at the Reno women's shelter, which has only 20 beds and a two-week limit on stays.

Out of a dozen people interviewed in the tent city, six had come to Reno from California or elsewhere over the last year, hoping for casino jobs.

"I figured this would be a great place for a job," said Max Perez, a 19-year-old from Iowa. He couldn't find one and ended up taking showers at the men's shelter and sleeping in a pup tent barely big enough to cover his body.

The casinos are actually starting to lay off employees.

"Sometimes I think we need to put out an ad: 'No, we don't have any more jobs than you do,'" Royal-Goodwin said.

The city will shut down the tent city as soon as early October because the tents sit on what will be a parking lot for a complex of shelters and services for homeless people. The complex will include a men's shelter, a women's shelter, a family shelter and a resource center.

Reno officials aren't sure whether the construction will eliminate the need for the tent city. The demand, they say, keeps growing.

The Story So Far.....

NEW FOUND GLORY show tonight was awesome. even though they didn't play a couple of jams I wanted to hear. One of course being "story so far." All in all it was a good as I expected. Not a doubt way better than the PARAMORE show. It was a bummer that CRIME IN STEREO couldn't make it, I was really looking forward to seeing them but hey vans will always blow up.

Don't expect me to show you and pictures, all I got is my memories.

We Finally Made It Home!

Okay, so I'm sure by now you all have heard the sad news of Aloha Airlines filing bankruptcy and no longer being in business. Being that we were on vacation, we hadn’t watched the news. My Aunty Lulu, a travel agent, called me on Monday advising me to contact Aloha since they had ceased all of their flights. After trying to call Aloha several times that morning and receiving nothing but “All circuits are busy…” I decided to call United Airlines directly. I spoke with a rep. and was able to make arrangements with no hassle to catch a flight on UA. I was told that all I had to do was check in at the UA counter and will not have to pay anything additional.

Tuesday morning comes and the UA counter was so chaotic. Travelers and the UA Employees didn’t know if they were coming or going. It was like everyone was running around like chickens without heads! When our turn came, I thought that it would be a breeze since I called the day before and got everything squared away with new seating assignments and confirmation number. Boy, was I wrong! We stood there waiting while the UA Employees tried to figure out stuff. What stuff, you ask? I have no idea?! They kept making phone calls repeating all the information I had given them… blah, blah, blah. After 2 hours and 45 minutes of waiting (yes, we were waiting that long!), we finally get the word that we HAVE TO PAY! Can you believe it?! We had to fork over an ADDITIONAL $2200 just to get home! And they say that is a discounted price!!!!! I didn’t argue. I just wanted to get home!

Going through security. Take off shoes, take off Sasha’s shoes, take off sleeping Sierra’s shoes, make sure Sage’s shoes were off and his back pack in the tray with nothing in his pockets, take out cell phones from our pockets, take out camera, dvd players, put all carry-on bags on conveyer belt, take out sleeping Sierra from double stroller (now she is awake), fold double stroller and put it through. Whew! Just hang in there, we’re almost pau!!! What now? Oh you gotta be kidding me!! We got selected for full body search! Everyone has to line up, but no touching… arms stretched out to the sides. I have to hold Sierra out in front of me while they pat her down. When that’s done, I still have to hold her out in front of me until they are done with my Rey (I thought my arms were gonna break off). Once Rey is done, I hand Sierra to him so that they can search me. Then we have to wait while they go through ALL our stuff!

By the time we are done with all that and make it to the gate, they are almost done boarding the plane. I swear this was worse than an international flight! We flew to San Francisco and had a 3-1/2 hour lay over. Thank goodness they had a kid's area with science things and tunnels to crawl in. We made sure we had Sasha and Sierra burn off some energy. Once we started our flight back to Honolulu, the girls fell asleep (Thank God!!). Rey and I couldn’t sleep. I think we were in shock!

Trying to be optimistic about our given situation, I thank God that we did make it home safely and that our kiddies weren’t acting crazy!

what i have to say...

so today was pretty much a crazy ass day. so i did go to work.had so much to do, but it wasn't that bad. well later on today it was crazy ass raining and it was so hard to drive. but you know me i made it. later on picked up my sister. later on i drove to andrew's house to get the backpack that he wanted to give me. i am so glad that i went. andrew got me the kenneth cole LEATHER messenger job. it is the cutiest thing that i have ever been given. god i love that boy. i wish he were my boyfriend. i feel like he would take wonderful care of me. well we are doing ok as friends now so let's leave it like that.

well i was driving on my way back from andrew's. i was driving on my way back home. well when all of a sudden my flip- flop got stuck on my break petal and i rear ended the car in front of me. i was so shaky afterwards, but what can i say. it was sad. but i still had that beautiful backpack. oh wait let me not fucking forget. the car turned off on me. well after that i started fricken out becasue that is the last and only car my family has left. so well i prayed and then asked my mom what can i do. i turned it on again, and believe it or not, but there is a guardian angel that i have and he turned on the car for me and i was on my way.

so my webcam isn't working, don't ask me why i do not know. i'm pissed though because i can't talk to tayla or crissy. so i called hp support team, those STUPID motherfuckers. took over control my computer for a whooping 2 fucking hours. wasting my 120 min. and did not a damn thing. so i'm going to have to ship it to them and have them fix it. why the whole thing i am watching the Democratic National Convention. i was so mezmorized. i listened without bias and i have officially endorsed the man that will be the next president of the united states. i am now endorsing Barack Obama. i am a republican but i am also a moderate in politics. i believe that we do need change. and if i were to help vote in McCain we would just be in the same boat. we would just be in the same situation. these past 8 years have not really been positive for me in the sense of finance! the money is just not cut it. and maybe with a new leader, we might see that change. ya'll know that gas is just to damn expensive, STILL !

tomorrow is my first day of school ! i'm excited, yet nervous. i think this is a good start. my sister asked me today do you really want to be a lawyer. i said, "yeah, sure, I JUST WANT TO MAKE MONEY !!!" i think it is going to make a difference.

no one really likes the fact am thinking about going to reno. but if i do get my pell grant, i'm going. i think it would be fun. i would just stick to my school, work a small job to make extra cash. but i will just focus on making friends and school. i really want the real college experience. just let me be and i will figure out what i really want.

so senior year has finally come to an end. it should have ended june 10, but i honestly think that we have become even stronger. god i have to admit that i honestly had one of the best years of my life. i got so close to some great people. i learned to cope without using alcohol as an outlet. i learned that i am great no matter who wants me and who doesn't. tayla taught me that, i love you bitch. i have decided to delete all my albums from my myspace. i have posted them all throughout last year. i have put them all in a flash drive. they will certainly will be put alway, i want to be able to pull them out next year, cry a little and just be able to remember every memory. FUCK ! why is everything so hard. i will miss everyone .

i am ready. i am ready to meet new people. to just become a new diffferent person. i started to run every morning with like 4 sweaters and sweats to see if i lose weight. i'm going to really focus on school because now, if i fail a class, i just lost some money and i do not lose my money. i just finally got out of my car payment and i think that now i can be able to save for greece. if not greece maybe for a better car, or even to move up to Reno next year. i think that with some money i can do it. i love everyone! i am ready for a new beginning.

Alex Woodard - Reno

Alex Woodard's self-titled debut album is out today, and if you've kept up with site.w♥m, you'd know that you can get him to write a song about you if you pre-order his album.

It looks like you need to use PayPal to buy his album, and your email will then be used so they can contact you directly about your personal song. You'll also be grant exclusively to "The Woodshack" for more cool stuff with Woodard.

I wasn't offered his album for review, but based on this one song, "Reno", I thought this news was worth mentioning. It has a country/western feel to it, and I did like the duet with Sara Watkins. Her sweet southern comfort voice is a nice counterweight to Woodard's country pop vocals.

Anyway, if you got a chance to check out W♥M Podcast #19, I did mention at the end that I would like to do more coverage on international artists. Fortunately, we received enough artists for this article.

Sound and Fury - 18

Most of the more metal/heavier rock I have given over to Soup, but on occassion, I would grab something if it looks interesting. Anyway, I thought I'd take a stab at listening to Canada's Sound and Fury's debut album - mostly because of the William Shakespeare's reference ("A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing") and their stunning cover art (who says album artwork doesn't sell a record?) The cover is a die-cut of "SF" covering most of the men in skull masks, which upon closer inspection looks like it might have been real skulls, photoshopped on their bodies.

Getting past the cover artwork, this album is actually pretty rockin'. I can already hear AC/DC and early punk influences in their song (especially with the vocals and some of the frantic guitar riffs), this band sounds like they are from the 70s/80s.

They seem like a relatively young band, being that this is their debut album (just released June 26^th on Rebel Youth Records). Plus a lot of their subject in their songs involves early age/high school, such as "18", "Teenage Rampage", "School's Out", and "High School Hotbox"... hey as they say: write what you know!

They are sure getting their names out, being recently on the Warped Tour and now supporting Airbourne and Bang Camaro, so be sure to check them out all over the US and UK:

South-The Pain

If their description of "Coldplay" and "Travis" doesn't turn you off, then you'll love this London-based trio, South.

Although (based on their fifth album, You Are Here), they do sound more contemporary British pop/rock, they did originally started out as more of an electronic act. This is especially evident with their work with Stone Roses' Ian Brown (the Madchester scene is still some of the most influential music today) and UNKLE's James Lavelle (who was so impressed with these lads that he signed them on his own personal label, Mo' Wax).

Since I'm not familar with their earlier releases, they must've shifted gears in 2003, after leaving Mo' Wax's label. However, there is a rumor, based on singer/songwriter Joel Cadbury's blog that suggests they might return to the more dancey origins because they want to release a brand new remix album. I'm sure you'll see that soon, if not next year.

Listening to their latest album, I absolutely the crazy horns on "Lonely Highs", it sounds like some Spanish flamenco song... completely out of the blue. But listening to enough music, I can tell you that the single that everyone will love should be "The Pain". This song starts off with a nice bass, followed by a very Kink-esque melody.

Other songs worth checking out are "Wasted", "Better Things", and "She's Half Crazy" ("don't you know that she's half crazy?").

PS, there is a hidden song at the very end of "Zither Song". It sounds like a warped record, but it's a nice bonus.

Donna Lewis-Obsession

Welsh singer/songwriter, Donna Lewis, rocketted into fame with her 1996 VH1 hit single, "I Love You Always Forever" from her platinum-selling debut album Now in a Minute. If you have never listened to pop music, just head over to her myspace and you'll be in for a treat. The song has a very catchy rhythm, and the lyrics seems to go on and on.

For fans of Lewis, you'll be happy to know that she's been steadily releasing music - her latest from last year is In the Pink. I can see from her album that "You to Me" is probably the hit single, it tries to capture that "I Love You" feeling, but more acoustic and sweeping backing vocals. An excerpt of the song appears again in a reprise version, just to remind you that this is the song.

Apparently I am wrong, because her single from this album is "Shout", a jangley acoustic song with a focus on her sweet voice.

The title of this album, not a reference to Tori Amos, comes from her song, "Pink Dress". This track, along with "Obsession" (I love the whispery "wishing well" that sounds like she's singing "whissing well") and "Shut the Sun Out" suggests more of an electronica/dancey future for Lewis. Although I like seeing this kind of experimenting and change, I don't think her hardcore pop fans would appreciate this... but I did enjoy her dance songs a lot more than her love/sugar pop songs.

In the Pink have been out since April through the US via Peruzzi Music and Redeye Records.

Although currently based in New York, this DJ/singer/mixer/music producer, Salme Dahlstrom, was born in Sweden. Once again, the Swedes does not disappoint with this latest release called, The Acid Cowgirl Audio Trade - out today, August 19^th via Kontainer Records.

After a short introduction to the album ("this is your brain on music..."), you're hit with an explosive dance number, "Bombastic". This is a hard-hitting song, it uses a lot of drumming and beats and it's just very catchy.

I will have to point out that her "playful" imagery of a salute on the cover artwork as well as the lyrics "line up like a Nazi/watching every move that I make" might offend some overly sensitive people. Although I don't have a problem with it, I know this subject is still relatively taboo.

It's also hard to listen to this album without thinking about another Swedish woman called Robyn. Especially in the easy-to-sing-along "C'Mon Y'All" (the main lyrics are "ooh la la, sing ooh la la, c'mon y'all").

She's clearly a talented woman, having written and put together all her songs. It looks like The Acid Cowgirl Audio Trade might be her debut album, consisting of two previously released EPs, with three brand new tracks ("C'mon Y'All, "Bombastic" and "Wearing The Peace").

She's supposed to be on tour for support of this album, so I'll be sure to mention her tour dates if those are made available.

Gen Wesley "Burn the Christians and Bomb the Serbs" Clark

Westly Clark is a butt kissing POS.... he was the 1 star General and Commander of Fort Hood Texas. He was the one solely responsible for giving Janet Reno the Military Equipment, manpower, and weapons to slaughter the Branch Dividians at Waco Tx.

Whether or not you agree with how it was handled is not the issue. The Posse Commitus Act protects us from our own military. They cannot use any military equipment, personal, or weapons against US civilians, nor can they come into your house. This is why our police don't have Machine-Guns, tanks and rocket launchers.

The US Military are not policemen.

Clark defied the law and gave Janet Reno (Bill Clinton) everything she wanted to engage and slaughter US civilians by the Federal Government.

For his reward for silence, he was promoted to 4 stars in less than 5 years, and made Commander Of All NATO Forces in Europe. He was relieved of command for ordering British General Tommy Thompson to attack the Russian forces who were advancing on the airport in Kosovo.

Thompson refused, and General Clark was relieved of Command by Clinton. However, he still had the "secret" on the Clinton's so they didn't make a big deal out of it....but its still in the record.

Command experience ? It was Westly Clark who ordered the bombing of Serb cemeteries to blow their loved ones out of the ground and demoralize the population. They responded by gathering on their bridges in mass to act as human shields of their infrastructure.

His combat experience is limited to 3 weeks of combat in Vietnam. He was on one of his first patrols when he was hit. He never returned to combat.

Anyone who ever served with him remembers him as a elitist, ego maniac, POS. No one in the military likes him.

He's now relegated to liberal "useful idiot" status by the DNC. He's hoping for a VP slot, but everyone knows he'd totally destroy the ticket.

It is finally Friday!!!!!!!! Hooooooooooooray!!!!!!!!!!!! If only the smoke would blow out of the valley then fun would be eminent for the weekend. I was looking forward to tennis and swimming this weekend but it looks like that will come to a screeching halt.

Since it is recommended that strenuous exercise not be done out of doors at this time due to the smoke filled valley. Yes, I understand that even the Reno skyline is not visible from the outskirts of Mogul; "C" hill in Carson is but a mirage in the distance.; Lake Tahoe's incredible view has disappeared. Co-workers in Elko are wondering what the blue-gray haze is from.

David was hoping to shoot this weekend, but with the smoke all he would get is red hazy lighting in all of his photos, better that he waits until it clears. His friend/model is participating in some sort of bikini contest here in Carson....wonder how the competition will be......she wants photos taken while she does this. This is the same girl who did not want her nudes to be posted on the net for fear she would be recognized and it would put her soon to be military career in jeopardy.

Dane is looking forward to college classes in the spring. He has been browsing the college class schedule and finding that the classes are available online too; which would free up some of his schedule for continuing to work.

Dak looking forward to high school this fall and making plans to attend WNC for chemistry classes in the spring. Mini-man has quite the plan mapped out for himself.

Dean was recently registered on Classmates. com and found himself looking at many of his friends and girlfriends (yikes) from Half Moon Bay HS (one guy who he used to play football with has changed dramatically); I set up his account and loaded pictures of our boys and of me (made sure it was a very provacative portrait; in good taste of course) and gave a few details of his life. I will dig out an old picture of him to load for the "then" photo. His now photo is a couple of years old but I cannot find anything where he is smiling- all photos look like his pictures from football-game day face.

Survived my double-header keynote at Smalltalk Solutions 2008

I just finished giving my jam-packed keynote at Smalltalk Solutions in Reno. I knew the originally proposed "persistence" part of the talk was going to come up a bit short, so luckily the organizers allowed me to also give my evangelizing talk (Seaside: Your next web framework) as well. Even though this talk was "preaching to the choir", it seemed people listened to it rather intently, to help them understand how to sell Smalltalk and Seaside to others.

James Robertson has the highlights (and an image of me that makes me look very tiny) over on his blog. Check it out there. The slides I used will be archived on the STIC site as well.
