Found It!

For days I’d been plagued with it, that fetid aroma, sweet, sickly and cloying, clinging to the tiny hairs in my nostrils and filtering backwards into the damp darkness of my throat and lingering there.
I knew that smell, that vile bouquet that had in the past seen me playing detective, following the unclassified scent cloud only to unearth some misfortunate rotten rodent resting lifeless, red, black, brown, pink..it’s internals now externals, laid out for all to be repulsed by.
What was once a vibrant, vital, scurrying busy beast was now a putrescing display of colour, a glistening rainbow of repugnance and my kitchen floor the canvas upon which it had been painted.

…And there in the living room, languishing, luxuriating in the dusty honey beam of sunlight pouring through the window, lies Bailey. Our cat, the rodent, frog and bird murderer looking as though butter wouldn’t melt.

That was then.. this time despite the smell of death haunting me, my detective work was in vain. There were no furry bodies lifeless in the death chamber aka underneath our kitchen table or indeed anywhere nearby yet still the scent bothered me and as it grew stronger I became more determined to seek out the source of the hideous stench.

Seek it I did, and find it? Well yes, since you ask, I did.
The only thing being, I wish that I didn’t.

Sonny was the root of it. Sonny being one of my daughter’s Giant African Land Snails.
You see when I failed to find any evidence of dead creatures in the house, I decided to turn my attentions to our tanks and vivariums. We have thirty or so critters in those tanks so there was a good possibility that something had breathed it’s last.

How does one check if a snail is dead? Well one picks it up of course.

Cold and lumpy, liquified snail flesh streamed into the palm of my hand exuding a smell that no person should have to experience, my gag reflex kicked in and I exclaimed ” FOUND IT!!”

birds and bees and dollhouse bits

I am back, after going east for a gorgeous wedding (photos will show up on Flickr sooner or later this week), and now return to posting!

The goths are not impressed with these attempts at making pets look steampunk. I'm not sure if they'd look more favorably upon this be-goggled paper squirrel.

If you prefer miniatures, however, fear not -- now there's a tiny steampunk keyboard for a tiny dollhouse steampunk computer!

It often seems as if all the steampunkish convos are taking place on the coasts, but happily the Void Company is throwing a bash in Knoxville.

I am the worst pet momma ever

I came home tonight after a long day that followed a too short but wonderful weekend away to find that my poor babies had been a wee bit neglected. Okay, a lot neglected. They hadn't been left alone, but I've a couple animals with special needs and they didn't get the care they needed this trip. And it's my fault.

On Wednesday before I left town I had planned to run by the vet's for more medication for Evita (my eldest doggie) and the special cat food that my kitties are all on now because one of them has feline urinary tract disorder. Well, I forgot that my vet closes at noon on Wednesdays and so even though I bolted home to try to get there before five, I was hours too late. On top of that, I forgot to tell my neighbor that I needed him to pick up the food and meds from the vet until late on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, after a few texts back and forth, I thought that he'd actually picked them up.

I was wrong.

I came home tonight to find that the cats' bowls were filled with half eaten dog food, the kitchen was spotted with little dried pools of kitty puke, and, worst of all, a very happy bouncy Evita who isn't using her back right leg at all anymore, and though she bounded out the door with me to take a whiz in the neighbor's front yard, she refused to walk any farther, instead turning immediately around to go back inside the house, hop-limping all the way.

I think that saying I burst into tears is pretty accurate.

I've kind of been through a lot with all my animals, but Evita is the dog who kept me sane and helped acquaint me with scent of honeysuckle vine behind my house and sunrises over my fenceline when I most needed to be reminded of beauty in the world. She's definitely a big part of the reason that I started feeling whole and healed as early as I did. And now I feel just terrible that she'll have to wait until we go to the vet tomorrow to get some pain medication, but she doesn't seem to terribly affected right now.

As for the cats, they're quiet and happy, sated on cans of tunafish. They might make me pay for it later, but they're sweet, sleepy, purring things now.

I'm going to blow my nose, dry my eyes and get ready for bed now. (After I vacuum of course--there are veritable tumbleweeds of cat hair blowing through the living room right now.) I'm sure my reaction tonight was due in some part to sleep deprivation and I could definitely use my beauty rest, so dear pillow here I come. [But I wouldn't trade my sleepless night for anything. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane...not mine, but his, and I felt very...humbled...that he let me see so many photos and mementos and so much of where he's come from. So to that one reader...thank you.]

I need some explanations

So is the moon not in my house lately? Is that why I've had such a fucked up week?!
From losing my phone last week, buying the new POS that they refuse to return because I "used it more than 30 minutes" my dishwasher still not working correctly, throwing my back out yesterday, being THIS CLOSE to being out of dog food and bunny food and cat litter, I am still stressed to, well not the max, but whatever's right below that.

My rent check hasn't cleared yet, or at least hasn't *tried* to yet. I hope the bank lets it though. I'm about 100 dollars short in my account... *crossing fingers & toes*.

So as well as rationing my own food, I'm having to do the same for ellie and the bunnies. She's getting half dog half cat food, and the bunnies are getting a lot of fresh greens. I, am eating a lot of rice. Lame. whatever. Luckily, Emelina shared half her burrito with me for breakfast. That was nifty.

Yesterday as soon as I got home I got the trusty heating pad out and laid on it all night, and then slept with it as well. Today I'm still in a lil pain, but it seems the 3 ibuprofen have helped a lot, more than the muscle relaxer did yesterday. Weird. *shrugs*

It's only wednesday. Sigh. I'm getting a home phone installed today. yay for that. Well, hopefully he doesn't show up before I get home. My window is from 5-7, and I get home *usually* around 5:30 depending on traffic.

I think all the stress has been giving me all these crazy dreams lately. I Can't remember specifically right now what they were but they've been odd. I've been sleeping in weird positions, where in i wake up because both my arms are numb, and drooling a lot LOL... hahaha.. hehehe.. yeah...

I got my new couch slipcover yesterday. It's more of "berry" color than a reddish burgundy like I saw online, but it's still pretty. Now I just need someone to help me get rid of the old stinky couch.

I curled my hair today and made an effort to look cute in hopes that would bring up mood.. its half way worked. I got a call from one of my customers saying "Thank You and that I did an amazing job" and he was so surprised that I did so much work. So that made me feel better too. Ü

Forget the debates; I'd rather watch the Dash and Grammy show

(Yes, I watched the debate. Yawn. I'm waiting for "the moment." It's not coming, is it?)

My mom, "Grammy," formerly known as Meemaw, is in town visiting. Grammy has no bigger fan than Dash, who knows that his likelihood of scoring a new matchbox car each day skyrockets with Grammy around. He knows who butters his bread! (Of course, he doesn't eat that bread, because it has butter on it... a post on his eating disorder is forthcoming...)

Meanwhile, with Grammy around interacting with the kids, I can't help to think back to my own childhood and how we're continuing some wonderful traditions, like pepperoni rolls. I fondly remember taking pepperoni rolls in my lunch, and now Petunia loves them more than anything; they're #1 on her favorite foods list, followed closely by broccoli. (There will be no post on her eating, as it's perfect, like pretty much anything Petunia does.) Grammy baked four dozen pepperoni rolls for Petunia's lunchbox today; they should last until her return visit in December, unless the Guv starts getting into them, in which case they'll last until Sunday. (I wish I had the nerve to post on HIS eating disorders, but they are too numerous and give me indigestion just at the thought.) I'm also hearing a lot of the rhymes of my childhood, like the "you must pay the rent" routine. It's nice, her passing things along to my kids that I enjoyed.

But there's continuity, and then there's change. In my childhood, we couldn't really say words like "suck" or "crap." It's not like we got our mouths washed out with soap or anything; we just knew not to say those words. Well, Dash and Petunia are the children of the Guv and Rox, and let's just say that we have a "you can only swear inside our house and sometimes the car" rule. (I'm not the only mommy blogger with this rule.) The rule doesn't exactly work when people come to visit, but, well, teaching a kid how to swear appropriately is important! So we're working on it. Part of the problem with our teaching, though, is that we are funny, funny people. Meaning that if our kid starts dropping f-bombs, we should probably scold them, but we can't; we're hiding our laughing faces, especially if they've used it in either a very appropriate or a very inappropriate way. It's our fatal parental flaw: we laugh when we probably shouldn't. The shame of it...

Case in point, this afternoon, I had to tell Dash that a playdate was cancelled because he had a fever. Dash took all of two seconds to start repeatedly screaming "YOU SUCK!" in my face. I cried for my own mommy, through my tears of laughter, asking "What do I do in this situation? What do I do?" And her response was basically, "It's too late to do anything because you're already laughing" -- which made me laugh harder. Eventually, he stopped (appropriately, and for the first time ever -- well done!) yelling that I suck, and we moved on to other things, like tracking snails.

Thinking off and on that I really have to start cracking down on my kids regarding proper speech, lest they morph from saying "you suck" into saying horrible things like "Joe Sixpack" and "drill, baby, drill" (that was NOT appropriate for PG television!), I resolved to talk it over with the Guv tonight.

And then Dash went to tell his Grammy goodnight. He yelled down the stairs, "Goodnight, buttcrack!" (his favorite word that he's only allowed to use in the house).

And Grammy promptly responded: "Goodnight, buttcrack!"

At that moment, I had an urge to e-mail my siblings, because I'm confident that neither of them has ever heard our mother say "buttcrack." Realizing it's bigger than them, than us, here it is in a blog post for posterity. My kids swear, and now my mother's saying "buttcrack." The battle's lost, and so's the war, and hell's frozen over, and we're all going there... laughing all the way, ha ha ha...

Missing Mina..."A dog is the only thing that will love you more than it loves itself"

Mina lives at the end of my street. I fell in love with her in the spring. She belongs to a couple who tether her outside for many hours and then keep her locked in their kitchen when they bring her in. Mina came from Puerto Rico via Buddy Dog. She was rescued along with her puppies by a group of nuns who secretly care for street dogs and then get them out of the country to agencies that are charged with finding them "good" homes. Mina didn't get that lucky. The people who took her think a dog just needs to be tethered outside, fed and maybe they spend a little time with her here or there. What grabs at me and turns my heart into a wild trampoline is her loneliness and confinement.
Mina loves to run. She's very social and gentle. Her beautiful eyes melt when you love her up. I know because I was allowed to walk her until August. Most days, at least once a day I'd take her, sometimes for several hours. She ran with packs in a dog park, with such incredible abandon and joy, she seemed intoxicated by her freedom, yet she never left my sight. If I walked away to throw trash in a bin, she 'd come racing to me like a child, and we'd greet each other as if we hadn't seen each other for a long time. Sometimes I imagine we both knew the time was limited and that sooner or later, someone would put an end to our lovely routine. Mina became my heart.
Mina still lives in the yard at the end of the street. She waits there or gets tangled on her tether or she watches, then she lies down on this pillow on a wicker lounger on the porch. The owners' broken house, once grandiose and out of place, is like an ancient tree stump, upended and then resettled. She waits for someone and she waits for me. But her people put a stop to our time together. I cannot visit her except when I sneak into her yard. I send my kids and their friends to bring her treats and toys and to play with her for a few minutes. They are not interested but they humor me sometimes.
Last night, on my way to work, I drove past her house, expecting she'd be inside by then. She wasn't. I stopped because she heard my car and knew it was me. I couldn't leave without going to her for a few minutes. We greeted each other like we hadn't seen one another for a long time., completely silentl but full of that rampant joy that floods the veins with adrenaline, with gratitude. When I left she was jumping, trying to follow. What can I do? The family is what they are. They see me as a threat. I tried to make them like and even appreciate me but we have a different view of what a dog is for and of Mina. I have tried to get agencies involved: Buddy Dog wants her in a home where she would be walked consistently and paid attention to. But there is no law being broken. So, that's that.
Love is like this. It seems to me that the energy of love is uncrushable. That the capacity to feel it is, once expanded, indomitable.
I hope some day to freely play and run with Mina again. I don't know how but I won't give up. I have to say that missing Mina has untied some of the old sutures in this tiny museum of my heart. I feel that I am hers. I will fight to bring her love and dignity. My renewed committment to making what comes out of my mouth match up with what I am doing I call Mina's Law. My hope, well, that's irrational, my wish, well, that's not realistic either... but without it, I would not do my work or bear the contradictions in myself and in human beings. We're all made of it. We don't always notice and I suppose that's a good thing. Right now, I know it - this contradiction between what we say and what we do is something I think that we stop viewing as "inconsistent" when we become adults. Kids know this about adults. They hear adults say one thing: respect, be nice, don't lie, and then adults behave an entirely different way. We are supposed to suspend our awareness of these contradictions when we are adults - it's an unearned privilege we have over children. Well, I see it with the dog, that same unearned privilege. It diminishes all of us.
