Indigenous Peoples and Archaeologists Collaborate In Peru

One of the most important trends to develop in both anthropology and archaeology during the latter half of the 20th century was the inclusion of indigenous peoples into the larger social science discourse (beyond simply being “subjects” or “objects”). In some countries and in some areas of investigation this inclusive process began at an earlier time then in others. For example, in North America the collaborative process between anthropologists and Native Americans began as early as 1941 (Jones and Stapp, 2008). In other places, such as in South America, the process of including indigenous voices and knowledge in social science research and theoretical discussion did not begin until much later. Despite these differences in time, it has generally been acknowledged that including indigenous peoples in the anthropological and archaeological research process has greatly expanded our knowledge base, data sets, and overall understanding of the human condition. A contemporary example of this is the current collaborative process taking place in the Central Andean region of South America between archaeologists and local indigenous people.

In the yungas (hot valleys in Quechuan) of the eastern cordillera Montana along the eastern face of the Central Andes archaeologists are working with indigenous peoples in several endeavors (see the work of Christian Isendahl and Daryl Stump for example). The Montana plays a decisive ecological role at both the continental and global scales – forcing the moist easterly air masses of the South Atlantic anticyclone to ascend and release precipitation that feeds the Amazonian drainage with nutrient-rich, sediment-laden water. The Montana provides an important variable for Amazonian rain forest ecology, structure, and distribution and played an important role in the growth of indigenous peoples’ prehistoric complex societies in the lowland Neotropics, as well as contemporary indigenous groups and cultures. But the Montana physiography is not a homogenous slope landscape; it forms a complex mosaic of landforms that house considerable ecological variation principally based on differences in altitude, precipitation level, and slope gradient.

Hello Wall!

Somethings never change. The level of crazy-busy in my life is one of them. But Fall 2008 is a fantastic kind of busy. The job is keeping me busy, but I like it. I also have skating which occupies 2 nights a week and one complete (very complete) weekend. I have also squeezed in friend time! But not enough, because there are friends (Drew!) that I'm just not seeing.

(smack!)

That was my 110km per hour body smashing into a wall.

I'm sick. It's the no voice variety. Pretty much the most important thing I need for my job. It's leaving town. On a bus. Good-bye voice! I'll miss you!

Knowing that my voice will likely be a professional challenge for the next thirty years, I did the semi-wise thing. I left school at lunch. The wise thing would have been to stay home all day. Oh well. I taught the morning with a lot of writing on the board, finger snapping and hitting the floor with a meter stick. That last one was funny. I'm not a mean teacher, certainly not with my angel class, but this made it seem like I was. Raising my voice to say "Les amis!" was just not possible.

I guess I just need to do less.

Just started watching the political debate. The Canadian one. Go Elizabeth May. It's only been one question, and so far, I think she is the only one that answered it. I think that she has a plan, and I'm not sure the other do.

Kkillur Handbag by Verzat

For my 22nd birthday, my co-worker, G., bought me the bag pictured to the right.

Gorgeous, right? And this picture only barely does the fabric's colors justice. Up close they're even more beautiful and vibrant. Best of all is that the bag has more than enough room for day-to-day needs plus at least one book, all without being obnoxiously huge and cumbersome.

Verzat, the company that sells this bag and many others (as well as a huge selection of beautiful jewelry), was started by some of G.'s friends after they graduated from university. Based in G.'s hometown of Lima, Peru, Verzat is - for the time being - more than a little cut off from the US market, but my sense is that everything these girls are making has huge market potential.

Unless I'm completely insane, and the American public has become so mechanical as to be immune to beautiful handmade alternatives to the mass-produced crap that's constantly marketed as attractive and "unique." Blech.

In other news, today was hot hot hot, which, quite frankly, caught me off-guard. We've had such pleasant weather here in the District these past few weeks, but suddenly it's over 90° outside during the day and the humidity is through the roof (read: 65% - what do you want from me, I'm Californian!).

The only way to deal with this kind of weather is to take a shower immediately after being outside, thus voila, today's PotD. For the record, I have no clue as to how my tan lines are still so visible. I haven't even seen the ocean this summer (which is tragic), and I spend most of the sunlit hours at the office. Hm.

The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

Aside from working and showering, the other noteworthy aspect of my day was speeding through the first 88 pages of Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point. It's a book that's been recommended to me many, many, many times, but that - for whatever reason - I've never really looked into until today.

(And this is after letting a copy sit unused on my bookshelf for at least two months!)

Anyway, so far, I've found it to be quite fascinating. The part of me who's still a huge American History geek loves that Gladwell uses Paul Revere as an ongoing example for the chapter about the Law of the Few - makes me want to pick up some huge American History tome. Come to think of it, I have Chernow's biography of Alexander Hamilton sitting on the bottom shelf of my desk...hm.

But back to Gladwell: I'll reserve further thoughts until after I've finished reading, but the preliminary verdict is that it's obvious why The New Yorker took him on as a staff writer, and I'm very glad I'm reading this book now, when I'm at a point in my life when its subject matter is relevant in a more than theoretical way.

Vast swathes of the western Amazon are to be opened up for oil and gas exploration, putting some of the planet's most pristine and biodiverse forests at risk, conservationists have warned. A survey of land earmarked for exploration by energy companies revealed a steep rise in recent years, to around 180 zones, which together cover an area of 688,000 sq km, almost equivalent to the size of Texas. Detailed mapping of the region shows the majority of planned oil and gas projects, which are operated by at least 35 multinational companies, are in the most species-rich areas of the Amazon for mammals, birds and amphibians.

Researchers used government information on land that has been leased to state or multinational energy companies over the past four years to create oil and gas exploration maps for western Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Colombia. The maps showed that in Peru and Ecuador, regions designated for oil and gas projects already cover more than two thirds of the Amazon. Of 64 oil and gas regions that cover 72% of the Peruvian Amazon, all but eight were approved since 2003. Major increases in activity are expected in Bolivia and western Brazil. I spotted this little girl with her puppy, carrying home a sheaf of plants she had gathered.

I don't know if the plants are meant for animal fodder, firewood, or another purpose. Finding out will require another bit of research on the flora of Peru.

4/20/2007 update: Fellow traveler Christine Tibbetts writes that while I was photographing, she was questioning Sheila, our local guide, on this point. The bundle is eucalyptus, intended for the family's cooking stove.

When she reached a point on the hillside above her home, her method was quite efficient: she just kicked the bundle downhill.
