Have you ever volunteered for something? If so, what?

I volunteer quite a bit actually! Not as much as I's like - I have to earn a living too!

My major effort is as a Joey Scout leader. In other words I entertain 7 year olds for 1 hour a week and get them interested in Scouting. I also get an excellent excuse to do fun science experiments and craft activities...

I suppose the most interesting thing I volunteered for was the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The volunteer applications closed about a year before the games and you could nominate what areas you wanted to work in. I nominated as a help desk operator as I'd had experience in that area. Unfortunately, I never made it to the Olympics - not even as a spectator. My son was born less than 2 weeks before they started and I had my hands full!!

Maybe next time they are in Australia?

Last Monday, we had an all-staff meeting at work to learn about our company's role in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. It ended up being the greatest all-staff meeting in history!

We
all shuffled into the lunch area at 10:00 a.m. to find a breakfast
buffet offering pastries, mini-quiche, bagels with a variety of
toppings (including cream cheese and lox),
yogurt with granola, and juices. There were also Marketing folks
handing out high-quality Olympic Canada scarves and Olympic pins to
each employee. We loitered and chatted with each other until 11:00
a.m., at which time we were directed into the common area.

The
common area was set up to host a press conference, complete with a
podium, cameras, microphones, the whole deal. When the press
conference began, we all looked on as our president announced a
partnership between Port Metro Vancouver and the 2010 Olympics. The
Olympic organization is going to use our building as the Media Center
during the Olympics. After that announcement, Canadian Olympic athlete
Kyle Hamilton
spoke about the importance of Vancouver hosting the Olympics. Kyle was
part of the gold-medal-winning Men's Eight rowing team in Beijing. At
6'6", he's pretty tall.

After Kyle's talk, the meeting was
wrapped up with a video. This video involved the three Olympic
mascots, along with our mascot, Salty Sam, doing crazy mascot stuff out
on a boat in the harbour. As the video progressed, the mascots got
closer to our office, making their way into our lobby and then finally
opening our office door. The video ended, and in came the Olympic
mascots! It was wonderful! The rest of the meeting was spent with
staff getting their pictures taken with Kyle and with the mascots (sans
Salty Sam). I was able to build up the courage to get a picture taken
with my favorite mascot, Quatchi.

By the way, work hasn't decided
what is going to happen with employees during the Olympics. But rumor
has it that because of the additional security, all non-essential
employees (definitely me) would get two weeks off. Sounds great... but
we'll see.

Despite committing an error almost DPRK-esque in magnitude, China will get to keep their team gold. What does this mean for Chinese gymnastics and gymnastics in general?

1.) China will continue falsifying ages. It's naive to think otherwise. They're just going to be much more careful about it. Are they going to risk another He Kexin and fake the documents of another little prodigy and attempt to erase all articles referring to her as being age-ineligible for the Games mere months before the Olympics? Well, I don't know. That was a huge risk to take. Not only did it pay off for them, but they got away with it. If nothing else, they're no longer going to put important documents on the Internet anymore.

2.) China will now be put under a microscope. While I'm going to say that any articles about rising stars that end up on the Internet will not have any references to age, people will be keeping caches of any and all articles. Speculation will continually follow them.

3.) The FIG and IOC, long regarded as incompetent, have lost pretty much all credibility. This whole "investigation" was just a dog-and-pony show to put up the pretense that they're doing something and that they do not condone the cheating. They had the same evidence before the Olympics as they did when they started this whole thing. They just hoped that, like all news stories, it would soon fade away for the next big thing. Unfortunately for them, the only way that would have happened is if any team, not necessarily the USA, but any team had won over China. But China won and when a team that most people believe is cheating wins, those people want something done about it. What I wonder is what this will do to Grandi's bid to raise the age limit. When they refuse to enforce the age limit in place now, it's stupid and unfair to impose a higher limit.

Knowing that this decision will be unpopular, the FIG and IOC brought in Yang Yun and Dong Fangxiao from the 2000 Sydney Games. Yang famously said she was just 14 in a documentary aired on state-run television and Dong showed up as a worker at the 2008 Games with papers that suggested she would have been ineligible for Sydney, not to mention that her own blog also supported that. I highly doubt it's still up on her blog, though.

However, the statute of limitations for medal revocation is almost up. And what would be the point now? Some have suggested that China is barred from the 2010 Worlds (being barred from London 2009 isn't much of a punishment because the National Games are also around that time and China never sends their A-listers to the Worlds vs. the National Games). Given the rules in gymnastics, not only would China miss a major competition, but they wouldn't get to qualify for the Olympics. Since the top 24 teams in 2010 get to go onto 2011 and those 12 teams qualify a full team to the Olympics (that is, if I have that right).

But you want my prediction on the absolute outcome of everything? Nothing. Absolutely nothing will happen.

I JUST WATCHED HIS BEIJING VIDEO.

It's kinda weird *for me* to see your idol go crazy over another person XDDD~

I admire Usain Bolt now.

Thanks to him.

I was setting up my new laptop that I purchased especially for my upcoming trip to Japan. When setting my Google news preferences I decided to put Morning Musume in as a keyword. But nothing came up :(. So I decided to put AKB48 in, and I found this article. Here is the text from GamesBids.com...

#2. Italian volleyball player Francesca Piccinini

Best name, too. Funny official web site with interactive menu. And I swear I didn't even know about all the naked pictures of her that are on the Internets. Well, after all, she is Italian.

-->

#1. US hurdler Lolo Jones

OK, she could have been one of my big losers, too, after she choked in the finals with a big lead, heading for a gold medal with one hurdle to go. But she's beautiful, she has a great story, and her web site is called RunLoloRun.com and has an outstanding version of Whatever Lola Wants as background music. And look how sad she was after she lost...

It's not too late to report on the Olympics, is it? It took a while to get over the devastating defeat of USA Softball (maybe the one sport I actually didn't watch).

First up, my list of the biggest losers of Beijing:

#3. French swimmer Alain Bernard

OK, the guy won the gold in the 100m freestyle. But before that happened, he declared that the French 4x100 relay team would "crush" the Americans. Then, in the final, he anchored the race, heading into the final 50 yards with a massive lead over USA. And, of course, he then totally choked and let Jason Lezak catch him (maybe you remember seeing Michael Phelps celebrating... like about 300 times in the following 2 weeks.)

#2. American gymnast Alicia Sacramone

Well, she did earn a little more respect from me when she appeared at Fenway Park this week, but she still goes down as a big loser in my book. With the US gymnastics team leading by a decent amount through 2 events, Sacramone stepped up to the balance beam and, bam, she fell off before she'd even gotten on. Pretty bad, but the US still had a chance at gold going into the floor exercise. Up comes Sacramone again, with a chance to redeem herself. Instead, she falls on her ass (literally), and the US, with the 2 best female gymnasts, only manages a silver medal.

#1. American pole vaulter Jenn Stuczynski's coach

Jenn Stuczynski won the silver medal in pole vault. The only person who beat her was the greatest female pole vaulter of all time and world-record holder from Russia. Stuczynski is a big winner, except in her choice of coach. After she finished, NBC played the "pep talk" from her coach. He ripped her for not having it that day, and couldn't have seemed more disappointed by winning silver, barely even looking at her. He came out looking like a total dick, and wins my biggest loser of the Olympics award.

Check it out here.

I'm slow with this. Anyway at the recent Olympics in Beijing, the women's ping pong team won ourselves a silver. When it came to the individuals' event though, noone managed to push beyond the semis, not even our women paddlers who were in the top 10 of the world rankings. The drama however belonged to the male paddlers, in particular, our top-ranked fella, Gao Ning.

Local media, and the public, went to town with how he lost his match to some fella a number of ranks below him, and how he lost without a coach by his side. The dude was crying after the game and I felt sorry for him. Apparently his coach, Liu Guodong, said that he'd be there but he went to oversee one of the female paddler's game instead and didn't come back because the game ran late. And the team manager, Antony Lee, didn't make any contingencies for a spare coach to be present.

The association's newly elected president, Mdm Lee Bee Wah, went ballistic upon finding out that this was merely the tip of the iceberg. Apparently Liu had always given preference to the womens' team, because their medal chances are better than the men's so Gao's training has never been optimum which is a shame for our top male paddler.

I don't totally agree with public sentiment telling Gao to stop complaining and that he should have had the mental capacity to battle. Yes, you need mental fortitude in sports but if you've ever played competitively, I think you'd appreciate as well how a coach doesn't just prepare you for the day you fight, but being alongside you to provide guidance and encouragement. Especially, when the heat of battle can cloud emotions and judgements, it's important to have someone on the side to make sure you're on track. Anyway, noone fights a battle alone.

Obviously, all the frustration leading up to the Olympics was probably boiling within the young man and when it came to the match he'd been training 4 years for, to be abandoned by the person hired and entrusted to make sure you do your best, at the last moment, was the final straw. How many of you would like to be in his shoes?

The issue's been so-called resolve right now but it's disturbing how shallow the people who've been brought in to improve our sportsmen are. If all they care about are the medals regardless of development, then we're going to lose out in the long run and will always rely on mercenaries won't we? I can't blame him for his stand as I'd think he's being judged on performances too. But there's a fundamental problem in how we always put winners on pedestals and forget about everyone else who gave their blood, sweat and tears for the cause but didn't make the mark. That probably won't change for another 2-3 generations probably but well, I hope it does change.

-->

At my gym there is a pool. The pool is not a small pool, but it's certainly not of Olympic size either. I use the pool at least twice a week, but it was this morning that I started realising some unspoken Pool Politics going on as to who swims where.

At one point, I counted ten people in the pool: on the far side by the steps was a disabled boy and his father; a little further in was a collection of other people, including someone I can only describe as a man in a woman's swimming costume and an old lady who had back-combed all of her hair away from her neck in order to allow her to only practise her back-stroke.

Nearer to me was an old lady (yes, most users of this spa are old) wearing her glasses, then a younger lady with goggles and a swimming cap, who was apparently practising her best Becky Addlington impression. Of course, such strenuous swimming techniques induce quite a splash, much to the disgust of the lady in glasses, who made no attempts to hide her grimace every time Becky Addlington swam past. I threw a few amused glances her way, and she seemed to respond in mutual disdain.

Anyway, in the middle lanes of the pool, a couple decided it was necessary to stop swimming, but to stand still thus allowing absolutely no body to use those two lanes whilst they were resting. Why? Because they're idiots. This rift forced the grimacing woman to swim closer to the wall, pushing Addlington further towards me, and leaving me scraping against the side of the pool with no where to escape to. This did not bode well with me, and I found great satisfaction in 'accidently' splashing Addlington everytime she came up for air. Call me childish if you will, but I'd say it was more primal: I was being backed into a corner by someone trying to out-do my breast stroke, what do you expect? I soon realised my splashing was travelling a little further than I intended, and that the grimacing woman had now turned her focus onto me every time I swam past. Needless to say, the splashing stopped.

Minutes passed, everyone too arrogant to move or leave the pool - not to mention too politically correct to ask the disabled boy and his father to move on if they weren't intending on actually swimming in the two lanes they were taking up. Finally, the man/woman left the pool, with an effeminate flick of the wrist as she climbed the steps onto dry land. Shortly after, I enjoyed watching Becky Addlington call it a day and get out.

Alas, my joy was short-lived, as the grimacing woman took the opportunity of an empty lane next to me to move in for her attack. Too scared to face her, I left the pool.

I always feel really, really cool when my mom and my aunt wanna hang out with me. No one makes me laugh harder than these two when they get going, I think. Honestly, it's just an experience. The inside jokes, the accents, the new heights of ridiculousness they go to. It's the best. I mean, did you see that bell?
