Young voters hint at electorate shift

WASHINGTON — Some voters under 30 are conservatives. An equal number are liberals. But a striking majority of the Millennial generation agrees on one thing: who should be the next president.

A USA TODAY/MTV/Gallup Poll of registered voters 18 to 29 years old shows Democrat Barack Obama leading Republican John McCain by 61%-32%, the most lopsided contest within an age group in any presidential election in modern times. Obama's margin is overwhelming across four groups of younger voters, divided by their engagement in the election, their optimism about the future and other factors.

"I think he can actually relate a great deal more to our interests and values and beliefs," says Lisa Kettunen, 24, of Otego, N.Y. Kettunen, an administrator at Hartwick College who was among those polled, particularly likes Obama's stands on protecting the environment and forging better relations around the world.

"We have a lot of really great ideas and hopes for change," Kettunen says of her generation, "and he's really speaking to what we want."

Some Republicans fear that whatever the outcome Nov. 4, movement of this generation to Obama could set political views through their lifetimes, reverberating in future elections.

"This is the equivalent of the Reagan brigades, where a whole class of people identify with a politician," says Dan Bartlett, a veteran of the Bush White House, calling it "a real wake-up call" for the GOP. Bartlett, 37, grew up during Reagan's presidency, which begat a generation of young conservatives.

If young people vote for Obama by current margins, he says, "Katy bar the door."

"This is the time in life you really start to grow your political roots," Obama adviser Linda Douglass says of those under 30.

Obama's strength among younger voters has offset his relative weakness among older ones and reshaped the electoral map. It has helped put states with comparatively young populations, such as Colorado and New Mexico, in Obama's reach and made older states such as Pennsylvania and Ohio a harder sell for him than for previous Democratic candidates.

From the opening caucuses in Iowa — where he organized at every college and many high schools — Obama has targeted young voters with his political messages and campaign methods. He has made unprecedented use of online fundraising to finance his campaign and social networking and text messaging to reach voters. Those techniques have underscored his connection with younger Americans.

"Sen. Obama clearly has some advantages with young voters," acknowledges Michael DuHaime, political director for the McCain campaign, though he says the Republican ticket will get its share of their votes. He predicts Americans under 30 "are going to turn out in strong numbers."

The USA TODAY poll of more than 900 young Americans, taken Sept. 18-28, included interviews by land lines and cellphones, which increasingly are relied on by younger Americans. (Three-fourths of those surveyed have a cellphone; one in five report using social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace to discuss the election.)

By a crushing 6 to 1, those polled say Obama, 47,understands "the problems of people your age" better than McCain, 72.

It's not only a matter of age: Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, at 44 the youngest nominee on a major-party ticket, gets the most negative favorability ratings of all among the under-30 crowd.

"Once McCain announced that Palin was on his ticket, that pretty much sealed the deal," says Nikki Boone, 26, of Middletown, Del. Once "open" to both contenders, she has decided to support Obama. "I don't think Palin is a viable candidate," she says.

By 55%-32%, younger voters say Palin isn't qualified to serve as president, if that were to become necessary. By 59%-19%, they call Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, 65, qualified.

Meanwhile, Obama's favorable ratings among those under 30 reach positive territory that is rare for a politician: 71% favorable, 23% unfavorable.

Big question: But will young people turn up at the polls?

Answer: Not all of them — about one in five are paying little attention to the campaign — and probably not at the rate more reliable older voters turn out on Election Day. But that gap narrowed significantly in 2004, when younger voters gave Democrat John Kerry his strongest support of any age group in his loss to President Bush.

Challenging the boomers

Scott Keeter of the Pew Research Center calculates there are 58 million members of the Millennial generation eligible to vote this year, about one-quarter of the total electorate and second in size only to the aging Baby Boomer generation. Voters under 30 made up 14% of the those who voted in 2000; 16% in 2004.

Their participation has been on the rise. The turnout rate for young voters jumped 9 percentage points in 2004 from 2000. In presidential primaries, their turnout nearly doubled in 2008 from 2000, the last time there were contests in both parties.

"In '04 they disliked Bush and in '08 they really like Obama," says Peter Levine, director of CIRCLE, a Tufts University research center on civic engagement and youth. "But as several of these happen in a row you start to wonder whether it's about the kids, not the candidate, at least to some degree. Other measures of civic engagement such as volunteering are much higher in this decade than they were over the preceding 20 years. When young people get involved in community service, they ask whether they should also be involved in politics."

For many, that participation has a Democratic stamp. By 40%-21%, young people consider themselves Democrats rather than Republicans.

Among all voters in the most recent USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, the partisan breakdown was a closer 35%-28%.

Among young voters, one-third of those who say their parents and families are mostly Republican see themselves as Democrats. Just 12% of those who families are mostly Democratic call themselves Republicans.

A USA TODAY analysis divided younger adults into four groups based on their level of political engagement, their optimism or pessimism about the country's future, their trust in the presidential candidates and the influences they cite as shaping their political views.

Those groups are:

• Fired up: Registered to vote, paying a lot of attention to the election and firmly committed to a candidate.

• Upbeat: The most optimistic about the future and favorably inclined toward both contenders.

• Downbeat: The most pessimistic about the future and somewhat less likely to be engaged in the election.

• Tuned out: The group least likely to be registered or paying attention to the election and the youngest of the groups.

Obama's lead ranges from 38 points among the "upbeat" to 26 points among the "tuned out."

His margin among younger voters overall, if it holds up on Election Day, would exceed anything recorded for an age group since 1976, when the first surveys of voters leaving polling places were taken. It would be bigger than the double-digit advantages for Bill Clinton among younger voters in 1996 and for Reagan among several age groups in his 1984 landslide.

A war their friends fight

Younger voters are more likely than older ones to cite education and the environment as major concerns. But they echo their elders when it comes to the top issue this year: the economy. Three in 10 call it the single most important issue determining their vote, and nearly half call it one of the most important.

"I probably vote more on the side of being a social conservative, but that's not what makes me wake up in the morning," says Wesley Neese, 26, a McCain supporter from Columbia, S.C.

"He's not my perfect candidate, but I do like his strong position on cutting spending," in tune with Neese's conservative fiscal views.

On the war in Iraq, ranked as the second-most important issue, younger voters are more likely than older ones to support pulling U.S. troops out now or to back setting a firm timetable for withdrawal — Obama's position. One in four support McCain's stance of keeping U.S. troops deployed there until the situation is stable, even if that takes years.

It is a war fought disproportionately by their generation. While just 2% say they have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, three of four know someone who has. Nearly one-third know someone who has been killed or injured in the two conflicts.

On lighter matters, younger voters by double-digit margins say they'd rather have a beer with Obama than McCain. They say they'd prefer Obama as a teacher or a boss, and would rather go to him for advice.

On one question, though, they rank McCain first, perhaps reflecting curiosity about the Arizona senator and former Navy pilot's compelling life story: They'd rather read his private diary.

Florida Teacher of The Year?

"Greg Howard taught his seventh grade social studes class at Marianna Middle School in Jackson County, Florida, that Obama’s C-H-A-N-G-E is actually an acronym for “Can you Help A N***er Get Elected.” Given that there’s no “y” in “change”, seems Howard can’t even spell correctly, much less properly instruct his class in social studies.

According to parents and students in Greg Howard’s seventh-grade social studies class, Howard on Friday, Sept. 26 asked the class a question regarding Obama’s call for change, and proceeded to write out what the letters C-H-A-N-G-E stood for.

“She told me that he wrote on the board ‘Can You Help A (expletive) Get Elected, and then laughed about it,” said Shelia Christian, a mother of one of Howard’s students.

Jackson County Superintendent Danny Sims said that description of this incident was “pretty accurate.”

Sims said Howard apparently repeated the action in more than one class, having made the comment in “a couple of periods.”

Oh yeah, if you listen to conservatives we have all these liberals in our school system infecting childrens’ minds with their left-wing agendas."

The credit squeeze, the character slurs and the political themes

There is a small amount of time left before the general elections, but the last month still has two presidential debates as well as all of the twists and turns that this extraordinary financial crisis can muster. This weekend has seen activity from Palin that has already driven from the news the Republicans withdrawal from keeping Michigan in ‘play’. In this race the Republicans, although underdogs, are still not ‘dead dogs’ as the Democrats could have achieved by now.

Palin’s highlighting of Obama’s connections to Mr Ayers (and by implication the Weather Underground) will not, by itself, win any more voters to the Republican cause. In order to roll back Obama’s lead, the McCain/Palin ticket needs to organize a concerted attack that weaves together a pattern that will make sense in terms of a narrative ark to the American people. Otherwise these attacks will just appear as they do hitherto – shots in the dark.

Obama needs to maintain a steady hand in face of these pinpricks. At a certain point, if these attacks do morph into a strategy he won’t be able to brush them off as mere slurs and smears. Headlines are how politicians rise and fall. Headlines if they persist become the news.

We've been warned: the presidential race between now and election day is going to be attack, Attack, ATTACK! Many Democrats have criticized Obama for not taking the fight more aggressively to John McCain. It may be a good sign that Barack, seems not to have let the advice of nervous supporters sway him from his overall strategy, because in retrospect, it seems that what he has done was the right thing at the time. Obama said the following in Asheville, North Carolina, today in reference to the McCain campaign's desire to turn the page from focusing on the dismal economy:

Think about that for a second. Turn the page on the economy? We’re facing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and John McCain wants us to "turn the page?" Well, I know the policies he’s supported these past eight years and wants to continue are pretty hard to defend. I can understand why Senator McCain would want to "turn the page" and ignore this economy.
But I also know this:
You’re trying to pay your bills every week and stay above the water – you can’t ignore it.
You’re worrying about whether your job will be there a month from now – you can’t ignore it.
You’re worrying about whether you can pay your mortgage and stay in your house – you can’t turn the page.
[...]
Senator McCain and his operatives are gambling that he can distract you with smears rather than talk to you about substance ... It’s what you do when you’re out of touch, out of ideas, and running out of time.

Sarah Palin wasted no time going into attack mode (via DailyKos):

"Our opponent is someone who sees America as imperfect enough to pal around with terrorists who targeted their own country," Palin told a rally of about 10,000 gathered at a tennis stadium in Carson, a suburb of Los Angeles.

And the basis for Palin's attack? Besides desperation and falling poll numbers, I mean? A New York Times article about William Ayers and Obama that concluded the two men "do not appear to have been close." In other words, living in the same neighborhood and serving on the same charitable boards does not mean you're "palling around" with someone, nor does it mean you endorse their actions from 40 years ago.
And if Sarah Palin wants to talking about palling around with people who find America less than perfect, then it's time to talk about her association with the Alaska Independence Party (AIP), the secessionist group whose founder, Joe Vogler once said:

The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government...and I won't be buried under their damn flag...

I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions.

Palin's complete dealings with the group isn't entirely clear, and unfortunately we can't ask Mr. Vogler about it since he was murdered in a plastic explosives sale gone bad," but we do know this: Sarah Palin probably attended the AIP convention 1994, the McCain campaign admits she attended in 2000, and as governor, Palin taped a welcoming message to them in 2006.
Via CNN:

The Statement: Republican vice presidential candidate Gov. Sarah Palin said Saturday, October 4, that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is "someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country."

Verdict: False. There is no indication that Ayers and Obama are now "palling around," or that they have had an ongoing relationship in the past three years. Also, there is nothing to suggest that Ayers is now involved in terrorist activity or that other Obama associates are.

Obama takes campaign to the iPhone (AFP)

I thought this article is worth mentioning for it demonstrates the cleverness and the Web2.0 forwarding thinking (that the American people are in need of) from the Obama campaign.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, in its latest bid to use Internet Age technology to trounce Republican rival John McCain and connect with supporters, has released free software that turns Apple iPhones into political rallying tools.

"Obama '08: The Official iPhone Application," available at Apple's online App Store on Friday, gives users "the tools you need to make an impact and stay in the know," according to the campaign.

The application, which also works on iPod Touch devices that are essentially iPhones without mobile telephone capabilities, contains information on Obama's positions on the issues, photos and videos from the campaign trail and news on the race.

The software enables Obama supporters to automatically scan their digital phone books for friends in states where their preferred candidate needs more support and uses GPS features in iPhones to find nearby Obama campaign offices or rallies.

"Making a difference takes only moments using the Call a Friend feature. Your contacts are prioritized by key battleground states, and you can make calls and organize results all in one place," the campaign said.

It also features a green button marked "Donate" for campaign contributions.

The Obama campaign has generally been more aggressive than that of McCain in using the latest technology and the power of the Internet to raise funds and register voters for the November 4 presidential election.

Button. Button. Who's got the Button?

As McCain trails in the polls and Sarah Palin is turning politics into a WWE Smackdown, we had better keep an eye on the Republican Machine and the Bush Administration. Are they poised to rig another election for their ticket? While all eyes are on Palin and the economy is Bush stirring something up with Iran? I honestly believe King George is the sort of power hungry man who would sacrifice any or all of us to stay in Foggy Bottom or at least secure a successor of his choosing. And I suspect that person is not Barak Obama. I believe it is completely within George Bush's realm of evil to start some serious crap with a country which does not care for the United States and put us all in eminent (for real) danger so that a new president could not be sworn in in January. So while we are all watching this three ring circus, who is watching what is really going behind the scene? I sure do get nervous when I haven't seen or heard Dick Chenney in a few days. Where is that evildoer? When he isn't torturing Batman or feasting on virgins somewhere?

My Mom had the opportunity to meet Oprah and Obama at an election rally in New Hampshire late last year. When Obama was giving his speech my Mom had the chance to take some photos with her Nokia N93. She's uploaded the photos on her Flickr account and she got some great shots. I think it's really cool that she got to meet Oprah and Obama, and got to take photos of them at the rally. I hope that Obama wins the US election.

What a Week

What a week! My finals for my 1st 6 weeks of culinary class has come and gone. Governor Palin did just fine at the debate with dork head Biden and my favorite---Da orenthal james simpson gots to goh to jayle!

First of all, I bet most people don't know that Biden is all for raising taxes. He voted each time for tax hikes. (you can look up his votes on the web) Yep that's the guy for me. Mr. Easy Way Out. That's how he'll balance the budget. Now, Bush ain't no saint either but he did inherit a deficit when clinton was in office. And i guess if clinton could do it so could Bush. And now the b.s. with this bailout....guess who approved to get Freddie mac and fannie mae on line? Take a guess? It was clinton! thank clinton and the commie-socio-crat party for that. People who could not afford a home that was wayyy over what they made per year were living in homes that they could only dream of. Well no use in crying over spilt milk now.. Does anyone know that the bail out money (700 BILLION, with a B) about 1/2 of it is going out of the country? That money should have been distributed to we Americans so that we would pump up the economy. But nope, we are giving SOME of it away to China, and others across the 'bay'. Oh stop already...Dang I got side tracked...back to dork head biden:

As I was saying, biden takes the easy, lazy way out:

It's like a real estate person trying to sell your home, no success--so the real estate sales guy tells his customer to lower the selling price of his home by, ohh, uh $30K. The real talent is not to tell the seller to lower the price but to be creative and make the sale at the price originally stated. Taking the easy way out might be and I say might be acceptable if it is the only way to keep going forward. But Biden has voted wrong many many times. When the crowd voted one way, Biden voted the other? And Obama, he could not make decision. 130 times he could not make a decision when he was supposed to give input (to vote). I don't call that a leader. His wife is anti-american..not been proud until this one time. Whateverrr!

As for this orenthal:

I knew he was guilty when he killed those two people 13 years ago and he thought he got away with sumtin'...but don't he know that saying, What goes around, comes around? His golf swings are like knife/dagger swings. When the reporters asked the disgrace of a football player, a question about the verdict, he stated an intelligent statement like this:

'Now I won't be able to see my kids graduate from college'. (What's he talking about, he baught his dagree fumm USC).

He should have thought about that (his kids graduating) when he pulled that stunt last year! Justice has been served. I hope he never gets out! I hope that this verdict at least heals a little patch in their heart for their departed and that they are elated, (The Brown's, and Goldman's). Their hopes and prayers have been answered.

The Los Angeles Police Dept should give a formal apology to Mark Fuhrman for treating him as an inept peace officer.

As for orenthal's daughter who 'fainted'...mere theatrics, I say,,,just show.

And now for my final...darn it, I missed an 'A' grade by a 0.5 of a point! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I say that is ok, only because noone else got an 'A' either. But then it is not ok, because I think the chef graded on the hard side. I guess I should expect it since he was recruited from the French Laundry, in the Los Angels area, a very very fine dining restaurant. this has just fueled me to do that much better.

I already finished my first week of these next 6 weeks (PCA2, Professional Culinary Academy2), the chef has a personality, gives us tips, and is just more involved in the class. I have enjoy this instructor quite a bit. He is from Hawaii, and was recruited to come here and teach. Chef has worked some of the big hospitality businesses there in Hawaii-a graduate from Univ of Hawaii. He has been in this business for about 30 years. Very fun guy!

These next few weeks will be fish, and more fish...made some ceviche...not bad. But I am not a fan of it.

I made a sauteed roquefort stuffed pork chop with swiss chard, bread pudding and wild mushroom ragout...i liked everything but the chard. Then I made another pork chop, Sauteed with caramelized sweet potatoes, bacon, braised italian kale, romesco and veal stock reduction. that was good! romesco sauce...I have never had-- very tasty! it has piquillo roasted peppers, spanish paprika, garlic, saffron, red wine, sherry vinegar and a few other ingredients. ummm- ummm good.

I learned how to butcher/filet halibut, snapper, sole, and monday it will be salmon, tuna, lobster, and make bouilla baisse with clams, mussels, snapper, shrimp, scallops, lobster claws/knuckles with rouille toasts.

Now say that last dish 10 times without faultering! Kinda like McDonalds', two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese. pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bunnnnnnnnnnn! baby!

well time to git....and nite all!

It's been a great week! Just grand! Livin' life large,,,Life's good!

Liberals, click "more info." America has always been attacked when she was perceived as being week. That is what will happen without a strong military.

For you liberals who think Obama sounds so good, and for you conservatives who want a good laugh, I'll break down Obama's foreign policy in layman's terms:

1) I'll stop spending $9 billion a month in Iraq. Does that mean he'll spend $8 billion a month in Iraq or none at all?

2) I opposed the Iraq War from the beginning; you know when I was a state Senator, back in Illinois.

3) I'll cut the "unproven missile defense system." You know, that missle defense system that has repeatedly shot down missiles and that same missile defense system that the Europeans and the Israelis want. Yeah that one!

4) I'll allow China and Russia to put their weapons into space ahead of us, leaving us totally defenseless against them.

5) Not only do I want us to be defenseless from space, I also want China and Russia to have superior air, ground, and naval forces too.

6) And I'll put my goons (the Defense Priorities Board) in the Pentagon to make sure that the Defense Department doesn't try to defend us.

7) To ensure peace throughout the world I will get rid of all our nuclear weapons. After I get rid of all our nuclear weapons, I'll talk to all the other nations around the world about getting rid of their nuclear weapons too. After they hear what I have to say, they will be so impressed with me, they'll get rid of all their nuclear weapons, and then we'll all live happily ever after.

8) My sole purpose in all this is not to defend America, to ensure that she remains free, but to make sure that I stay in power; because once I put all that money that would have gone into national defense and install a national healthcare system, my government will have life and death power over the American people.

Rotten ACORN

Within its shell, ACORN contains all the makings of an intriguing government political conspiracy movie: drama, injustice, organized crime, election fraud, intimidation, violence, money, lies, extortion and a presidential candidate.[1]

If you are a patriotic, middle class American who spends most of your time working for your family and enjoying your FREEDOM, you have probably not been bothered by the sounds of an ACORN dropping before now.

But, while you were sleeping peacefully at night, the roots of Socialism have broadened its reach, without determent right into the foundation of the White House.[2]

Allow me to enlighten you to the ways of a radical community action group that could impact your way of life forever.

ACORN is an acronym that stands for Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. Its mere definition contains hints of Socialism as it claims to be a group advocating for low- and
moderate-income families that addresses housing, schools, neighborhood safety, health care, job conditions, and other social issues.[3]

Beneath that surface lie violence, intimidation, threats, race baiting and direct physical attacks on property, people and the legal establishment.

Without going into the myriad details, many ACORN policy proposals are widely considered to be in line with the far left wing of the Democratic Party.[4]

If you are asking yourself what could possibly be so ‘bad' with a group that in theory advocates for low income families, then you've just given yourself the reason this group has been allowed to thrive in America with little scrutiny and under the radar of main street observation until now.[5]

In truth, ACORN is the most virulent, organized crime group in this decade...and it is funded by YOU.

Put simply, ACORN is ripping off the taxpayer through Congressional hand outs.[6]

In fact, ACORN was recently due to receive nearly $700 million of the $700 billion dollar bailout bill until Republicans in the Senate redlined it.[7]

Allow that to sink in for a moment: $700 million from the US for an organized crime group.

Yes, ACORN has been receiving Obama campaign funding, but what's worse is that ACORN leaders are actively extorting money from banks, mortgage brokers and Congress. To add insult to injury, ACORN is costing Americans millions to investigate all of its criminal activities across America.

And then there's the end of the democratic process through valid elections.[8]

Yes, ACORN is behind much of the rampant voter fraud.[9] ACORN has been involved with fraudulent voter registrations for years.[10] In fact, Missouri has 8 ACORN guilty pleas on record (for 2006 violations of federal voting laws) just this year. Many other states are investigating many hundreds of cases of voter fraud in their jurisdiction.[11] We have compelling evidence that ACORN has been involved in fraudulent voter registration since early in the 2007 launch of the Obama campaign.

But we don't stop at faulty funding and voter fraud. Obama's community organizational skills are synonymous with totalitarian tactics as its leaders use violence, intimidation, threats, racial baiting and direct physical attacks on property, persons and the legal establishment.[12]

When you shed the shell, there is just no good to the group known as ACORN. It is corrupt and without any upside.

With a group like ACORN running rampant in government and shaking hands in Washington, why not legitimize the Bloods and The Crypts? They too are street gangs but they just happen to push drugs instead of bogus registrations drives and sub-prime mortgage deals.

Uncle Sam should be putting ACORN at the top of its list as internal terrorist groups, yet the red, white and blue sense of justice seems to be crumbling. Many numbed citizens just roll their eyes at groups like ACORN simply because America has unfortunately become deadened to the idea that politicians have ulterior motives, nameless agenda's and behave unscrupulously at times.

However, the rest of this American story is without filtering or fear. The disturbing reason more ACORN activities go un-prosecuted is because the FEC as well as the FBI have refused to open investigations out of fear of rocking the Obama campaign.[13]

The MOST disturbing fact you need to know about ACORN is that its organizers have terrorized the Federal justice and law enforcement system into NON-action.

How can one group get away with so much? Because ACORN has many Democratic backers in Congress who work tirelessly for its perpetuation and the head ACORN nut is Senator Obama.[14] In fact, Senator Obama is so entwined in ACORN it has become a career and campaign double helix in his DNA.

If you're asking yourself what Obama has to do with ACORN, consider this:Obama has served ACORN as its attorney, has been its direct action trainer, its mentor, its contractor, and its PRIMARY illegal campaign funder. ACORN is part of the ‘Community Organizing'experience his evil empire would like to bring into the White House.[15] American men and American women should be recognizing that mother freedom is on the brink of extinction with one single NUT trampling all over liberty.

Who will be left sleeping peacefully at night as the ACORN marks the beginning of Socialism in America brought to you courtesy of Barack Obama?[16] With ACORN intact or worse, empowered in the White House, American Democracy will be a legend long gone. Socialism and criminality will be the rule.
