Author : Deborah Rodriguez

Release Date : Dec. 17, 2007

This novel is a true-to-life adventure of a certified hairdresser from Michigan, Deborah Rodriguez who "in 2002, helped form the Kabul Beauty School, the first modern beauty school and training salon in Afghanistan" (About the Author page __The Kabul Beauty School). In a country that has mixed feelings on the moralities of beauty salons (unbelievable but true), Deborah's achievement is all about overcoming cultural barriers and giving hope.

With a germ of an idea and a "can-do" attitude, she raises sponsorships from U.S. cosmetic companies, sometimes personally funding her classes, and practically doing everything she could think of to get the school up and running___even marrying an Afghan so she could stay protected in a country so hostile to women.

Deborah is one person I would like to meet. Through her book, she strikes me as a bohemian character, energetic, gutsy, quirky, self confident, uninhibited and above all, a woman with a big heart. I think I will like her if only for the fact that like me, she enjoys a good book with a margarita or two.

The Kabul Beauty School is an easy, enjoyable read with a down-to-earth writing style and lots of humor to balance genuine, heart-breaking accounts of the women the author has gotten to know. Surprisingly, there isn't a whiff of condescension; just sadness at the fact that women in Afghanistan are going through unbelievable oppression. But the author's natural optimism still sees hope through the indomitable spirit of Afghan women. Amidst the pain of cultural subjugation , these women could still find something to laugh about and to hope for , enough to fight for their own personal betterment. In the author's unique way, she saw their salvation in perms, hair color, and make-up!

I started reading this book in a cafe where I spent two hours sipping my glasses of soda and giggling my way through the pages. One of the many hilarious paragraphs that gave me the giggles:

"Then I pointed my scissors at Daud. He had a haircut that was pretty typical of the Afghan men I had seen so far--a sort of pompadour trimmed short in the back with a wad of hair puffed up on top. It was like the hairdo Elvis had sported in his most hideous days, when he was wearing those tight leather pants and awful capes made by the Ice Capades people. I hated it. ....."

"...We begin with the parts of Roshanna that no one will see tonight except her husband. Traditional Afghans consider body hair to be both ugly and unclean, so she must be stripped of all of it except for the long, silky brown hair on her head and her eyebrows. There can be no hair left on her arms, underarms, face or privates...We lead Roshanna down the corridor to the waxing room--the only one in Afghanistan, I might add...Many brides are either too modest or too fearful to have their pubic hair removed by others, so they do it at home--they either pull it out by hand or rip it out with chewing gum. Either way, the process is brutally painful. Besides, it's hard to achieve the full Brazilian--every pubic hair plucked, front and back--when you do it on your own, even if you're one of the few women in this country to own a large mirror, as Roshanna does."

You will find this book, funny, sad, outrageous, and candid all at the same time. It may pique your curiosity to learn more about Afghan culture after this book. It most certainly did for me. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute reading it.

I pray Deborah will be able to return to Kabul in the years to come, without fear of reprisals for her book or for simply empowering some women to learn a trade. Her commitment to open opportunities to Afghan women for making a decent living should be an inspiration to all those who wish to make a difference in this world.

My Mark : Excellent

God's Dog: Conversations with Coyote

Webster Kitchell

Religion, Philosophy

112 Pages

Published 2001

At a mere 112 pages you might be surprised to learned that I
spent more then two weeks reading this book, but every long moment was worth it.
These pages are packed with philosophical insights, questions, and perspectives
rarely grasped at elsewhere and certainly never all in one volume. At the same
time, Kitchell's use of the likable, trickster, semi-god Coyote sets the ideas
in an approachable and enjoyable story. While Kitchell is a Unitarian Universalist
minister and does mention the UU religion, anyone wanting to expand their
philosophy would enjoy this book. One warning: this book will fill some readers
with a strong desire to consume doughnuts.

This is the first book I've had to read for school thus far, and I gotta say it coulda been worse. It wasn't great but it made some very interesting points. Isabelle was St. Louis' (King Louis IX) younger sister and was often considered a saint herself. She refused more than one royal marriage, choosing instead to become founder of the first official Franciscan Women's order in France, and had a long history of personal correspondance with several popes. She is accredited with more than 40 miracles, although the majority of them occurred after her death in the late 13th century. She's a really interesting figure to look at not only because she was royalty and almost a saint, but also because she managed to avoid actually becoming a nun, therefore securing her power outside direct control of The Church. She also personally negotiated the rules of her order, Longchamp, and set a precedent that the majority of Franciscans female orders would follow.

I have an embarrassing confession: I have a love affair (or, perhaps, manifestation of OCD) with news, non-faction, and the internet. I've never looked at porn (though I am in Kevin's neighborhood so I have seen an interesting array of provocative photos of young Asian women by default - thanks for that non-fiction education, Kev!) or gambled (though I do my share of online shopping). Long ago, I'd visit chatrooms or message boards but now I don't know if those even exist anymore. I don't IM anymore either. My social interaction is pretty much limited to e-mail, Vox, and commenting (semi-anonymously) on local political blogs. So I'd say my internet "addictions" are pretty much limited to news, Vox, and shopping. The social networking and shopoholic tendencies don't seem all that unusual, but what about my voracious appetite for news?

I could spend hours a day reading on the New York Times website alone. While I am primarily interested in news (national, international, science and health are my favorites - but, hell, I'm game for New York politics sometimes too), I must admit to a heart flutter when I see a new contribution from The Minimalist, aka Mark Bittman (I could write a whole 'nother post about how much I love recipes - now that I think about it, maybe I should add that to my addictions list).

But it's not just the Times. I scan Yahoo and Google news regularly. I keep both my state and city's main news websites up all day at work so I can check for any breaking news updates whenever I want. Technically, this is perfectly acceptable - but I think the fact that it is not only OK but encouraged (it kind of goes with the territory) just fuels my obsessive-compulsiveness with it. I can justify that behavior as being professionally responsible. But what about when I wake up in the morning and check the NYT, state and local news websites from my PDA before I even get out of bed? Again, technically, I could say I need to know (especially the local stuff) so I can mentally prepare for the day ahead at work. But do I really need to know? Do I really need that kind of access? Somehow I doubt that I'm alone in this obsessiveness and in wondering just how unhealthy it really is.

How is it that my sister can go days (perhaps weeks if she didn't talk
to me) without catching up on the news? I mean, I had to tell her
about you-know-who being nominated for you-know-what days
afterwards. I, on the other hand, may need a 12-step program to break
my news addiction. If I'm not near a computer (or my beloved phone)
then I'm itching to find a radio to tune in to NPR. I'm a tweaker in search of my next headline fix, always on the lookout for a good, meaty story - some analysis I can sink my intellectual teeth into - some revelation that will give my blood pressure a good jumpstart.

I haven't always been this way (it's not like this whole 24/7 news
hasn't always been available). And I don't mean to sound all
melodramatic about it, but if I think about it, I really started
getting obsessive about checking headlines after 9/11. I'm not sure
why this is exactly because it's not as if there's anything I can
really do about anything that is going on in another part of the
world. And I try to tell myself that it's all irrelevant to my
existence (to some degree) - I could never take a paper, turn on the
radio, watch TV, check news online - and my life would be OK. It might
even be better. And yet I feel compelled to check. And I'm not into
Google Alerts or employing any kind of technology that automatically
ships me news - I like to look for it myself. If I have someone or
something else do my searching for me, I feel like I might miss
something really interesting - I love the feeling of stumbling across a
good story or delving into a topic I might not have thought I'd have
much interest in otherwise.

It's almost as if my childhood obsession with reading everything (everything
- cereal boxes at the kitchen table, various body care products' labels
while soaking in the bath, inserts included with prescriptions, etc. -
I am a junkie) has somehow been transmitted to this unlimited
wealth of knowledge (and garbage) known as the internet. In some ways,
it's like having a library at your fingertips.

Rumspringa: To Be or Not to Be Amish

Tom Shachtman

Non-Fiction, Anthropology, Religion

286 pages

Published 2006

A follow up to the PBS documentary, Devil's Playground, Tom Shachtman looks at the period of Amish Rumspringa through case studies. The Amish believe that each person should make their own personal choice as to whether to be baptized Christian. As part of that decision process, when an Amish turns 16, they are no longer bound to live by the rules set forth by their community. This is to give them a chance to experience the outside world and discover for themselves if they want to stay in the Amish fold or live in the outside world.

Shachtman does an excellent job conveying personal stories that include every living generation. He also shares the history, commonly held beliefs, and differences among modern Amish communities. He manages to stay unbiased except for the Amish approach to education. He shares his own doubt at the acceptability and necessity of taking their children out of school at 14. It moved along quickly and was thought provoking. This was a very entertaining book for those who enjoy reading about other cultures and religions.

The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals

Michael Pollan

Non-Fiction, History, Nutrition, Anthropology

464 pages

Published 2007

Michael Pollan acts as detective, tracking down the exact origins of four different meals. He takes us through industrial, organic, ethical, and personal approaches to food. Along the way, he compares the size of the carbon footprint and ethical implications of each approach. This book was a bestselling title in 2007.

To me this book was okay. I appreciated the in-depth view of the current standard American diet. The poor grammar was a little distracting. The first part seemed to go on a bit too long about corn. I was tempted to scrap the whole thing but instead I skipped some corn sections and found most of the rest of the book interesting. I especially enjoyed the section on Polyface Farm where Joe Salatin is a profoundly successful farmer producing delicious food by letting each form of life on the farm fully express itself.

It is possible that this book will be the "Diet For a Small Planet" of the new millennium.

David Sedaris' newest. I really like David Sedaris in the sense he writing doesn't require much of an attention span and makes for quick and easy but highly amusing reading.

I'm almost done with this one. I don't think it's as good as his previous books. It seems sort of forced, like David Sedaris trying to do David Sedaris. Maybe I've just become too aquainted with his style. So far Soultion to Saturday’s Puzzle is my favorite.

I found this book while shelving at the library. I've probably read the first page of at least half of the books in the library. Sometimes I feel like reading past the first page, and that's when I actually check books out. This one had an interesting first page.

I'm a little more than halfway through. It's okay so far. The essays are interesting, but a lot of the writing is dull (which is to expected from most anthropologists, I guess). So far my favorite part has been an essay about the intricacies of olive oil production and the olive-oil-based subculture in Tuscany. There's also an interesting examination of ritual fattening of young girls in Niger.

I'm only about 20 pages into this one, so I don't have much of an opinion yet. It's basically short vignettes about the author and her Iranian family adjusting to American culture. I have high hopes.
