Save Ginglik!

Hello,

Any of you who are familiar with London music venues, or having a good night out in West London will be familiar with the venue Ginglik.

Formally an underground gents toilet, the local government seems to have other plans for the site.

For all you Facebookers out there who are interested in saving this important venue there is this group you can join:

It gvies you email addresses to send messages of support and such, plus a couple of events to save the venue.

I wrote to the coucil folk stated in the group and put my best grown up voice on. Don't send some ranty message, just something stating why you think it's important for the venue to stay:

Hello council folk,

Apologies if these messages are becoming a pain, however I thought it would be important to highlight the importance of the Ginglik venue from both a music industry and local community perspective.

Working as a talent scout for a major label gets me to pretty much every venue in London. The Ginglik's accessibility to both emerging acts and promoters makes this an invaluable resource of new music to the local population and music industry. Also, it's placing means that many people from areas such as Ealing, Acton and Shepherds Bush have easy access to a solid grass-roots multicultural music venue. I do not no of one A&R person or artist who does not know the venue well. I also have many friends and colleagues who live in the surrounding area who are very concerned that the venue is under threat.

To remove this as a venue would further fence off live music to the areas of central, north and east London, remove yet another accessible venue for new and out of town acts and also remove a valuable asset that forms part of the area's cultural image. In the years I have lived in London I have seen local governments efforts to tidy up Shepherds Bush green and surrounding areas which have been noticed. However removing this important cultural centrepiece of Shepherds Bush Green would have a detrimental effect to both the area's image and micro economy.

DASTARDS - latest! 15 Aug 2008

Haven't been on here for a bit. Got various blogs to update. Don't get much feedback from this one - so guess it's not that popular.

So - what's new?

First off, WAKE is moving to London. Sadly it's almost impossible to get anyone from the music biz to move more then a taxi ride away from London city centre - so WAKE has given up his job and is off - tonight! He's already getting enquiries about his programming & recording skills through his www.TrackWriters.com web site. But what he really wants is to gain some recognition on the London (which means global) music scene for the DASTARDS - as this is probably the best band you've never heard of yet in the UK!

Next up - Stoo (the drummer and soon to be the longest serving drummer at 3 months!) is now gainfully employed, having moved to the Midlands from Scotland. Jake (bass) has got the necessary grades to get into Bristol (which brings him 60 odd mile nearer to the rest of the band!). And George is going to fund himself through his new Car Sales business.

Gigs - Next weekend (22-24th Aug) sees the band performing at 4 different venues during the weekend. On Friday (22nd) it's our first 'STRETCH RECORDS PRESENTS' night (as part of the Worcester Music Festival). On with DASTARDS are COBWEB DILEMMAS and JAZICA. All 3 bands could be riding high in the UK charts if there was anyone who knew anything about music involved in the major labels. As it is - it's up to us to promote the gig.

Several London venues have contacted us about playing there. But guess what? We have to supply 50 people. Usual old bollox. When will they make an effort to promote gigs? The band wants to play to NEW people. Not the same faithful followers who can easily see the band locally! Ugh! It makes me cross. The only people who profit are the venues / promoters. One day, they'll say. "We just love the music. Please come and play. And we'll pay you.". Then we'd make 10 times the effort to get a good crowd there ... One day they will learn.

New Franz Ferdinand Track 'Lucid Dreams'

Franz Ferdinand 'Lucid Dreams'

Franz Ferdinand have a new track, 'Lucid Dreams' streaming on their website. Not sure if the song is going to make the final cut for their new album, due out tentatively in early '09, but it is going to be featured in the Madden 09 video game. Upon first listen, the song starts out promisingly enough, with a funky, disco beat (as well as the familiar crackle and hiss of a needle dropping on a record, with the accompanying visual on their site), but the refrain returns to the all-too-familiar dance rock territory that Franz and so many other bands mined clean. It seems too repetitive for me, as the song meanders a bit and seems too similar to their unimpressive second record. Have a listen, and let me know what you think.

I’ve been away from here for while but I’ve been working on stuff!

Following my performance at London Pride this year, I’ve down a few interviews with both local and regional press. Most recently I’ve done an interview with Haringey paper and the Richmond & Twickenham Times…so its been great.

I will be performing at a music festival this coming Saturday and so really excited.

This is Tim Fite. He's a new find and he's awesome. He works with his brother, who doubles as a whacked out sound artist. If you listen, there are hints of Jim White and Tom Waits -- anger, ire, fringe psychosis.

well, i had hoped that gramophone magazine would have pulled itself out of the horrible mire of populism it was sinking into when i cut off my subscription, but it seems not. this month's editorial - http://www.gramophone.co.uk/newsletter/060508_newsletter_editorial.htm (as vox seems to have done away with the link button for some obscure reason) - just confirms it. this little gem features:

"Composers today have largely left behind the old credo that audiences are irrelevant to their work. Now they once again write music that catches in the ear, the mind and the heart."

anyone care to tell him that that happened about 20 years ago?

New Beck-'Chemtrails'

Pretty solid first track from the forthcoming, Danger Mouse produced new album 'Modern Guilt.' Very drum heavy and soaring, certainly has Mouse's DNA all over it. Sounds a little like Carribou, if you ask me. But this collaboration has me quite excited for the new Beck album, due sometime this summer, which features a song called 'Walls' with none other than Ms. Chan Marshall. Good news for people that like good music.
